The Echo Fix EF-P2 is a spring reverb pedal from Australian maker Echo Fix, built around a real three-spring reverb tank rather than a digital emulation. Echo Fix describes it as "a real Spring Reverb pedal that packs a huge sound into a small enclosure"1. The company was already known for its tape echo pedals before adding the EF-P2 to its range, and the spring reverb in its tape echo units is credited with at least partly inspiring this pedal2.

Where most reverb pedals model springs in software, the EF-P2 puts actual springs in the box, the same spring and tank technology found in the reverbs built into vintage amps2. Gearnews reported at launch that the design is based on a three-spring reverb tank, and that the pedal packs a full spring reverb into a compact floor pedal format3. Delicious Audio later described it as the latest release in the real spring reverb pedal niche2.

Controls and switching

The EF-P2 has four knobs: Spring Drive, Bass, Treble and Reverb Volume12.

ControlWhat it does
Spring DriveControls how much of your input signal drives the springs4
BassBass EQ on the reverb1
TrebleTreble EQ on the reverb1
Reverb VolumeLevel of the reverb1

Spring Drive is the control that sets this pedal apart from a basic tank-in-a-box. As MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley explained, it "controls the amount of your input signal is driving the springs"4. Pushing the tank harder changes the spring character, from a subtle wash toward the splashy, overdriven spring sound players associate with tanks driven past their comfort zone.

Switching is handled by two footswitches: one for reverb bypass and a second that mutes the direct signal2. That second switch is what makes the EF-P2 usable beyond a pedalboard. With the dry signal muted, only the reverb output remains, so the pedal can work as an outboard studio effect, and Delicious Audio notes it can be used that way2. The bypass itself is buffered rather than true bypass4.

Power and connections

The EF-P2 runs on a 9V DC center negative supply12, the same standard polarity as most modern pedals. It draws a minimum of 200mA2, which is substantial for a compact analog pedal and rules out sharing a low-current output with several other pedals.

At 200mA minimum, the EF-P2 needs a power output rated for at least that much on its own. Check your supply's per-output rating before plugging it in alongside other pedals.

The pedal accepts both instrument and line-level inputs, so it works on a board with a guitar in front or in a studio with line-level gear2. Output impedance is 1K2.

Size and build

The enclosure measures 160mm x 130mm x 60mm, or 6.29 by 5.11 by 2.36 inches12. That is compact by the standards of pedals that house a real spring tank, which That Pedal Show called "surprisingly compact" when comparing it against other real spring pedals5, though it is bigger than a typical mini pedal and takes a noticeable slice of board real estate. The pedal carries a 12 month limited warranty2.

Questions

Does the Echo Fix EF-P2 use a real spring tank?

Yes. The EF-P2 is built around a real three-spring reverb tank, the same spring and tank technology found in the reverbs embedded in vintage amps. Echo Fix describes it as a real spring reverb pedal that packs a big sound into a small enclosure, and the whole signal path is analog.

What power supply does the EF-P2 need?

It runs on a 9V DC center negative power supply and draws a minimum of 200mA. That current draw is on the high side for a compact analog pedal, so it needs a supply rated for at least that much, and it is not a candidate for a low-current daisy chain output.

Is the Echo Fix EF-P2 true bypass?

No. MusicRadar reports that the EF-P2 uses buffered bypass. When the reverb is switched off, a buffer keeps the signal path active rather than hard-wiring the input to the output as a true bypass switch would.

Is the EF-P2 signal path analog?

Yes. Echo Fix lists a 100% analog signal path for the EF-P2, and Delicious Audio and Pedal of the Day repeat the same specification. There is no digital processing of the reverb or the dry signal.

How big is the Echo Fix EF-P2?

The enclosure measures 160mm x 130mm x 60mm, which is 6.29 by 5.11 by 2.36 inches. That is compact for a pedal holding a real spring tank, though larger than a typical mini pedal, so it takes up a moderate amount of board space.

What does the Spring Drive control do?

Spring Drive controls how much of your input signal drives the springs, as MusicRadar explains. Turning it up pushes the tank harder, which changes the character and intensity of the spring response, from a gentler wash to a more driven, splashy spring sound.
