The Echo Fix EF-X3R Vintage Voice is a rack-mounted tape echo with analog spring reverb and analog BBD chorus, built on the same platform as the Echo Fix EF-X3R. Echo Fix describes it as delivering "the warmth and character of classic tape echo machines," with vintage-voiced echo repeats achieved through new tape heads and different voicing compared with the standard EF-X3R1.

The unit boasts a 100% analog signal path: the echo is real tape, the reverb is a real spring tank, and the chorus is analog BBD (bucket brigade device) circuitry rather than digital processing1. It is sold in limited numbers as a pre-sale, with an introductory pre-sale price, and ships three weeks from the purchase date1.

What it is and what it does

The EF-X3R Vintage Voice is part of Echo Fix's line of real tape echo machines, which builds on the company's experience making the EF-X2 Tape Echo over three years3. Where a digital delay pedal models tape behavior in software, this unit records and plays back on actual tape, with the mechanical character that comes with it.

Alongside the echo, the unit carries an analog spring reverb and an analog BBD chorus. Echo Fix also lists controls for wow and flutter via sample-and-hold modulation, which the maker says brings organic movement to the repeats and allows automatic tape chorus and flanging effects2.

The unit can also be pushed into self-oscillation. Echo Fix's own description:

"turn up the echo volume, dial in some feedback and watch as our unit self-oscillates into life and becomes an instrument"2

The controls: six head modes, LFO and echo EQ

The tape transport uses three playback heads, and a mode selector chooses which head or combination of heads feeds the echo signal. Each head sits at a different point along the tape path, so each mode gives a different delay time at a given tape speed1.

ModeHeads selected
1Head 1
2Head 2
3Head 3
4Head 1 + 2
5Head 2 + 3
6Head 1 + 3
7Head 1 + 2 + 3

Modes 1 through 3 give single-head repeats at increasing delay times, while modes 4 through 7 combine heads for multi-tap patterns. With tape speed variable from 3 IPS to 15 IPS and delay times spanning 56ms to 1755ms, the same mode can produce anything from a quick slapback to a long, spaced-out repeat2.

The echo signal has its own bass and treble controls, so the repeats can be darkened or brightened independently of the dry signal1.

The LFO Mod section adds RATE and DEPTH controls for the speed and intensity of the modulation, and a SHAPE knob that blends between a sine waveform and a sample-and-hold waveform. A sine gives smooth, continuous pitch wobble; sample-and-hold steps between random values, which is what produces the wow and flutter character2.

Power and the rack drawer

All of this functionality is housed in a steel 3RU sliding rackmount drawer with a high quality scratch resistant front panel1. The drawer slides out of the rack for tape changes and head access, then closes flush for transport or studio use. At 12Kgs, it is a substantial piece of hardware rather than a pedalboard item1.

Power comes from a worldwide-compatible 100 to 240v power supply, so no step-down or other transformers are required, including on US mains power1.

The unit ships from Australia, and Echo Fix states that import duties and fees are the responsibility of the buyer. For USA customers specifically, Echo Fix covers tariff and customs charges via its express courier, making the checkout price all inclusive for US buyers2.

Versions: Vintage Voice Blue and Gold

The Vintage Voice is available with either a Blue or Gold front panel1. The two versions share the same platform, controls, head modes, tape speed range, weight and power supply; the difference is the front panel finish. The Gold version is listed as rack mounted in the same 3RU sliding drawer2.

Both versions carry the same 2 year warranty for all purchases1.

How it differs from the standard EF-X3R

The standard EF-X3R is the same rack tape echo with BBD chorus and spring reverb, built on the EF-X2 platform3. The Vintage Voice differs in voicing: Echo Fix describes its repeats as "Vintage-Voiced Echo Repeats capturing the warmth and character of classic tape echos utilizing new tape heads and different" voicing compared with the standard unit1. Everything else on the spec sheet, from the head modes to the 12Kgs weight and the worldwide power supply, is shared between the two13.

Questions

How is the Vintage Voice different from the standard EF-X3R?

The Vintage Voice is built on the same EF-X3R platform but is voiced differently. Echo Fix describes it as delivering vintage-voiced echo repeats that capture the warmth and character of classic tape echo machines, achieved with new tape heads and different voicing compared with the standard EF-X3R. The controls, tape speed range and chassis are the same.

Does the EF-X3R Vintage Voice use real tape?

Yes. It is a tape echo, not a digital emulation, with a 100% analog signal path and a tape speed range of 3 IPS to 15 IPS. Delay times run from 56ms to 1755ms depending on the head mode and speed selected.

Can the EF-X3R self-oscillate?

Yes. Echo Fix says that when you turn up the echo volume and dial in feedback, the unit self-oscillates into life and becomes an instrument more than an effect. This is the same behavior players use on classic tape echoes for swelling, runaway repeats.

How much does the Echo Fix EF-X3R weigh?

Echo Fix lists the weight as 12Kgs for the EF-X3R Vintage Voice, in both the Blue and Gold versions. That weight reflects the steel 3RU sliding rackmount drawer chassis and the tape transport and spring reverb hardware inside it.

Does the EF-X3R need a step-down transformer in the US?

No. It comes with a worldwide-compatible 100 to 240v power supply, so no step-down or other transformers are required for US mains power. Echo Fix also states that for USA customers the checkout price covers tariff and customs charges via express courier.
