The Emanating Fist Electronics Dope Priest is a four-stage fuzz and distortion pedal from Emanating Fist Electronics, a builder whose maker page says "the Emanating Fist Electronics Dope Priest will give you the sonic enlightenment that you seek"1. The maker describes it as "the engine to your fuzz tone" and "such an intense distortion device", offering "unrivaled tonal projection with total clarity" and "highly articulate dynamics"2.

Sound and character

The maker's product page leans on clarity and projection, but the builders who have reproduced the circuit describe something rawer. One builder, RedSolution, reported in 202223:

"It's got a real raw midrangey sound that I was not expecting. The combination of the lower gain stages with the 1uf"3

Another builder, Minimallamb, who built the layout with BC549Cs, said in 2018 that it was "quickly becoming my favourite fuzz" and that it "sounds really raw compared to the russian/ic/bla"3. The midrange-forward character comes from the circuit itself, covered below.

Circuit and lineage

The Dope Priest sits at the end of a short line of related designs. The Guitar FX Layouts blog, which published a stripboard layout for the pedal in May 2017, traced it as "D*A*M Ram Head -> Emanating Fist Electronics XB-70 -> Emanating Fist Electronics Dope Priest"3. The blog's author, Zach, noted that as with the earlier XB-70, the core circuit influence is his own 1977 Guild Foxey Lady, though with the Dope Priest the blueprint is tailored rather than a straight replication, and that he had "taken some influence from V3 Sovteks and the Triangle Muffs"3.

In plain terms, the author put it this way:

"It's just s big muff with some value differences. Worked on it from gutshots."3

Two circuit details set it apart from other Big Muff family pedals:

  • Clipping: 1uF clipping caps combined with lower gain stages, a combination the layout author called "pretty unique"3
  • Tone stack: the BMP tone-stack, which a builder, Convergent Sound, found "quite nice" with "lots of usable area in the EQ control"3

There is no published schematic for the pedal. The layout was worked out from gutshots of an original unit3.

Transistors and parts

The maker describes "a gain selected quartet of silicon planar epitaxial transistors" in the multi-stage circuit, with "Audio grade high gain low noise BC549C epitaxial silicon transistors... deployed for circuit amplification"2. The layout author identified the quartet as BC549Cs, "selected for their sonic similarities to the obsolete BC239C"3.

For anyone building the layout, substitutes are documented:

  • 2N5088s and 2N5089s work in place of the BC549Cs3
  • Builder AlexS found the circuit "just really came alive using 2n5089's"3
  • Builder Casey Pittman's build "fired up first try" with 2N5089s and "sounds great"3
  • In the layout, D5 is a 1N5187, mislabeled at the bottom as D1 in the original posting3

The maker also specifies polypropylene capacitors "in place of parts commonly of ceramic construction in vintage units", which it says greatly reduces microphonics and RF noise2.

The Mids Switch version

Two layouts of the Dope Priest exist: the original and a version with a Mids Switch3. On that variant, the switch is wired as a DPDT on/off/on three-way toggle3. The maker describes the pedal's on-board controls as expanding "on the frequencies you wish to sustain and to distort", with "a wide degree of fl" flexibility from the mild to the extreme2.

Construction

The pedal is housed in a die-cast aluminum enclosure that the maker says has excellent shielding properties and is both extremely rugged and lightweight2.

Questions

Is there a schematic for the Dope Priest?

No schematic has been published. When the Guitar FX Layouts blog documented the pedal, its author said there was no schematic and that the circuit had been worked out from gutshots of the original, describing it as a Big Muff with some value differences. Stripboard and tagboard layouts based on that work, including a Mids Switch version, were posted in May 2017.

What transistors does the Dope Priest use?

The original pedal uses a gain-selected quartet of BC549C epitaxial silicon transistors, chosen for their sonic similarities to the obsolete BC239C. Builders reproducing the layout report that 2N5088s and 2N5089s work as substitutes, and one builder found the circuit came alive with 2N5089s.

What does the Mids Switch do on the Dope Priest?

The Mids Switch appears on a second layout variant of the pedal and is wired as a DPDT on/off/on three-way toggle. It sits alongside the pedal's on-board controls, which the maker says expand on the frequencies you wish to sustain and to distort, offering flexibility from the mild to the extreme.

How does the Dope Priest differ from a Russian or Ram's Head Muff?

Builders who have built the layout describe it as a different beast. One reported a real raw midrangey sound he was not expecting, crediting the combination of lower gain stages with 1uF clipping caps, a pairing he called pretty unique. Another builder said it sounds really raw compared to Russian, IC and Black Muff styles.

Is the Dope Priest a Big Muff variant?

Yes, in circuit terms. The author of the Guitar FX Layouts write-up described it as a Big Muff with some value differences, worked out from gutshots. The layout keeps the BMP tone stack, and the pedal's lineage runs from the D*A*M Ram Head through the Emanating Fist Electronics XB-70 to the Dope Priest.
