The Fender Competition Drive is an analog overdrive pedal from Fender's Competition series. Fender describes it as creating a warm overdrive reminiscent of classic '60s and '70s rock and blues tones, with harmonically rich crunch and sustain. It is designed to be placed in front of an amplifier: Fender suggests using it to push your favorite tube or solid-state amp, so it works as much as a gain-staging tool as a standalone dirt box.1

What it does

As an overdrive, the Competition Drive adds gain and compression to your signal rather than replacing it. Fender's own description frames it two ways: on its own it produces vintage warmth in the style of '60s and '70s rock and blues, and into an already working amp it pushes the front end into harmonically rich crunch and sustain.1 For a player, that means it can serve as a always-on warmth pedal at low gain or as a boost into a cranked amp for harder edge.

If you are comparing it within Fender's own range, the company also makes the Fender Drive, the Fender Santa Ana Overdrive, and the Fender Hammertone Breakup Drive, among others. For a wider look at the category, see the site's guide to Overdrive Pedals.

The Competition series

The Competition Drive is part of Fender's Competition series of compact pedals. Reviewer Trevor Curwen, writing at MusicRadar, described the series this way23:

"The Fender Competition series brings good value and unobtrusive designs to the firm's (once limited) effects range."2

He also noted that the Competition Series is board-friendly with a similar footprint to Boss compact pedals, and that the pedals are competitively priced, under £50 at many retailers.2 For players, that means the Competition Drive fits a standard compact pedalboard layout and takes up no more room than a typical Boss stompbox.

Power and setup

The Competition Drive runs on a 9V DC, center-negative supply and draws 11mA of current, according to RockBoard's PedalPedia's specifications.1 That current draw is low by pedal standards, so it is unlikely to strain a typical pedalboard power supply.
