Fender The Pinwheel Rotary is a rotary speaker emulator pedal with overdrive, built to give a guitar the swirling sound of a Leslie-style rotating speaker, the effect long associated with the organ. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as a way to "swirl your guitar sound in the same way" as that classic setup, and the pedal carries the label "ROTARY OVERDRIVE" on Fender's product listing1.

What it does

The Pinwheel combines two things in one box: a rotary speaker emulation and an overdrive circuit. On the rotary side, RockBoard's PedalPedia gives the player a choice of three different rotary speaker voices, including a vibrato voice, and each voice is switchable between slow and fast speeds, the way a player would switch a real Leslie between its slow and fast settings1.

One feature sets it apart from a simple speed switch: the intensity of the effect responds to playing dynamics. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as velocity control, where "the harder you play, the stronger you hear the effect," so the swirl deepens under an aggressive attack and eases back when you play softly1.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar's reviewer Alex Lynham placed the Pinwheel favorably among the recent wave of rotary speaker pedals, writing that "there's been a glut of attempts to model rotary speakers of late, and the Pinwheel easily punches up there with the best" of them2.

Lynham also noted the pedal's ramp control, which sets the speed at which the pedal transitions between presets, described as "the speed set by the ramp knob"2.

Power notes

The Pinwheel draws 350mA at 9V DC, center negative1. That is well beyond what a battery or a low-current daisy-chain supply typically provides, so plan for a dedicated high-current output on your power supply.

Where it sits in Fender's range

The Pinwheel is part of Fender's pedal lineup alongside its drive pedals, such as the Fender Santa Ana Overdrive and the Fender Hammertone Breakup Drive. Where those are straight overdrive and distortion designs covered on the Overdrive Pedals page, the Pinwheel puts the drive inside a rotary speaker emulation, a combination few pedals offer.
