The FoxPedal The Wave Dual Delay Reverb Modulation is a delay pedal that combines two programmable delay lines with a reverb and an optical modulation section in one box. Pedal of the Day describes it as delivering classic tape delay sounds in an Analog/Digital hybrid, with dual programmable delay times that make it easy to dial in ambiance1. The pedal is no longer in production: the reviewer noted that since these are no longer in production, players may have to do a little digging to find one1.

What it does

The Wave stacks three effects. The two delay lines can be programmed independently, and the modulation section adds tape-style warble to the delay signal using what Pedal of the Day calls incredibly rich optical modulation. A switch sets that modulation to the first delay signal, the second delay signal, or off1. The reverb sits alongside, with a level control that can be adjusted up or down or disengaged completely1.

The reverb circuit is built on the new Belton V3 reverb brick, which the reviewer says creates some gorgeous dark natural vibes. The Decay control adjusts the room size and the amount of modulation in the reverb1.

The three Tape Modes

A three-way Tape Mode knob selects from three classic tape delay settings, each changing how the two delay lines behave1.

Tape ModeWhat it does
Binson EchorecOne long repeat followed by multiple shorter repeats1
Roland RE-201 Space EchoDual rhythmic repeats in a classic warm gritty delay1
Echoplex EP-3A classic single analog-sound delay, using just one of the two delays for a simpler setup1

The machines behind these modes have their own histories. Pedal of the Day notes that the Binson Echorec was used extensively by Pink Floyd in their early years, and that the Roland RE-201 Space Echo was used by everyone from Radiohead to Brian Setzer1.

The Wash switch

The middle stomp switch is a momentary Wash switch. Pressing it stretches out the Feedback knob, taking the repeats straight into oscillation and spaced-out washes, and releasing it brings the feedback back to the knob's setting1. That means a player can push the delay into self-oscillation for a fill or an ending and return to the saved sound without bending down to touch a knob.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day reviewed the last version of The Wave, acquired when FoxPedal announced its closure, and came away enthusiastic1.

"Seriously one of the most fun pedals you've ever played, The Wave Dual Delay Reverb Modulation has something for everyone."

The reviewer called it a great piece of gear for wild tape delays, ambient reverbs and modulation1.

Questions

Is the FoxPedal The Wave still made?

No. Pedal of the Day notes that The Wave Dual Delay Reverb Modulation is no longer in production, and that players may have to do a little digging to find one. The reviewer demoed the last version of the pedal, acquired when FoxPedal announced its closure, so used units are the route for players who want one.

Is the FoxPedal The Wave analog or digital?

It is an Analog/Digital hybrid. Pedal of the Day describes it as delivering classic tape delay sounds in that hybrid design, pairing digital delay processing with an analog-flavored signal path and an optical modulation section for tape-style warble.

What does the Wash switch do on The Wave?

The middle stomp switch is a momentary Wash switch that stretches out the Feedback knob, taking the repeats straight into oscillation and spaced-out washes. When you release it, the feedback returns to whatever the knob is set to, so you can dip into self-oscillation for a moment without disturbing your saved setting.

Which tape echoes does The Wave imitate?

The three-way Tape Mode knob selects from three classic tape delay settings: the Binson Echorec, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo and the Echoplex EP-3. Each mode changes the repeat pattern and character, from the Echorec's long repeat followed by shorter ones to the EP-3's single analog-sound delay.

What reverb chip does The Wave use?

The reverb section is built around the new Belton V3 reverb brick, which Pedal of the Day says creates gorgeous dark natural vibes. The Decay control adjusts the room size and the amount of modulation, and the reverb level can be dialed up or down or disengaged completely.
