The FuzzHugger Algal Bloom 4k is a compact fuzz pedal built around the newest version of FuzzHugger's Algal Bloom circuit. FuzzHugger describes its job plainly: it focuses on "the circuit's thick, high-gain, yet chord-friendly fuzz tones" while trimming the control count to four knobs1. Where the full Algal Bloom carries a larger control set, the 4k keeps what FuzzHugger calls the four essential controls and drops the rest, which makes it a simpler way into the same family of overdriven fuzz.

The circuit's lineage is the Algal Bloom Modified, which FuzzHugger describes as starting with its "classic chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz" and enhancing its best qualities, with more gain and thickness, a slightly higher-fi sound, lower overall noise levels and a touch more sustain234. The 4k inherits that character in a smaller box.

Thick, high-gain fuzz that stays chord-friendly

The pitch of the Algal Bloom family is fuzz that stays usable with chords. FuzzHugger's own description of the 4k's tones is "thick, high-gain, yet chord-friendly"1, and the Modified circuit it draws from is described as "chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz with more gain and thickness than ever before. Slightly higher-fi, with lower overall noise levels, and a touch more sustain"784. In practical terms, that means a fuzz voiced so that full chords keep their definition instead of collapsing into mush, with enough gain on tap for sustained single-note lines.

The controls: Push, Thick, Voltage and Level

The 4k carries four knobs5. FuzzHugger's control descriptions, written for the deluxe finish version, explain what each one does1:

ControlWhat it does
PushBoosts and drives, increasing overdrive, sustain, brightness, nastiness1
ThickSets your overall hotness and thickness; scratches when adjusted1
VoltageFull voltage when right, anywhere between 9V and 18V depending on what you feed it; reducing voltage as you turn it down, relaxing gain levels and response, down to just a few volts full-left9
LevelVolume1

The Thick control is the same bias control that appears as "Bias" on the Algal Bloom Modified 4k, where FuzzHugger describes it as setting "your overall hotness and thickness" from lower gain to higher gain than earlier versions, and notes that it scratches when adjusted10. That scratch is a characteristic of the bias control, not a defect.

The Voltage knob is the 4k's sag control. FuzzHugger describes it as full voltage at full clockwise, then progressively reducing the voltage as you turn it counterclockwise, which relaxes the gain levels and response, reaching just a few volts at full left9. It is the same voltage-starving control found across the Algal Bloom line, including the full Algal Bloom111213.

Power: 9V to 18V DC, center-negative

The 4k requires a 9V to 18V DC center-negative adapter, which is not included, and takes no batteries6. That has two consequences for a pedalboard: there is no battery fallback, and the pedal needs its own correctly polarized supply. Because the Voltage knob's full-clockwise position depends on the adapter you feed it, running the pedal at 18V gives the knob a wider range than a 9V supply9.

Versions and finishes of the Algal Bloom

The Algal Bloom family is broad, and the 4k sits in it as the stripped-down four-knob version. FuzzHugger's listings show the range1061:

  • Algal Bloom 4k: four controls, 2.7 x 3.7 enclosure, offered in a Deluxe Clear Finish and as a Standard Graphic with no added finish69
  • Algal Bloom: the full circuit with a larger control set including Highs, Bias and Gain, in a 3.7 x 4.7 enclosure711
  • Algal Bloom S: a smaller version with the same thick, high-gain, chord-friendly focus, in a 2.7 x 3.7 enclosure14
  • Algal Bloom Modified 4k: a horizontal version with a deluxe thick acrylic finish, described as chord-friendly overdriven fuzz and OD10

FuzzHugger's own listings disagree on the 4k's enclosure size: the 4k pages give 2.7 x 3.7 inches16, while a graphic deluxe finish listing gives 3.7 x 4.7 inches61. Listings also show two prices, $155.00 and $159.00, for different finishes61.

A one-of-a-kind burlap deluxe finish 4k was listed at a $149.00 sale price4, and a B-stock unit with an imperfect finish was listed at $137.005.

Warranty

FuzzHugger covers the 4k with what it calls an "Endless, transferrable warranty, free parts and labor on repairs"6. The same terms appear across the Algal Bloom line, so the coverage follows the pedal rather than the original buyer.

Questions

Does the Algal Bloom 4k take a battery?

No. FuzzHugger lists the Algal Bloom 4k as DC power only with no battery option, so it needs a 9V to 18V center-negative adapter, which is not included with the pedal. The same applies across the Algal Bloom family, including the full Algal Bloom and the Modified versions.

What does the Voltage knob do on the Algal Bloom 4k?

It starves the circuit of voltage to change its character. Full clockwise gives full voltage, anywhere between 9V and 18V depending on the adapter you feed it. Turning it down reduces the voltage, relaxing the gain levels and response, down to just a few volts fully counterclockwise.

Why does the Thick knob scratch when turned?

FuzzHugger notes in its control descriptions that the Thick control, called Bias on some Algal Bloom versions, scratches when adjusted. It sets the overall hotness and thickness of the fuzz, and the audible scratch while turning it is a known characteristic of that bias control rather than a fault.

What is the difference between the Algal Bloom 4k and the full Algal Bloom?

The 4k keeps four essential controls from the newest Algal Bloom circuit, Push, Thick, Voltage and Level, and ditches the Gain knob and the on-board Highs control. It focuses on the circuit's thick, high-gain, chord-friendly fuzz tones in a smaller 2.7 x 3.7 enclosure.

Is the FuzzHugger warranty transferable?

Yes. FuzzHugger describes the warranty on the Algal Bloom 4k as endless and transferrable, with free parts and labor on repairs. The same terms appear across the Algal Bloom line, so coverage carries over if you buy or sell a used pedal.
