The FuzzHugger Algal Bloom Modified 4k is a compact fuzz pedal that takes the Algal Bloom Modified circuit and pares it down to four controls, focusing, as FuzzHugger puts it, on "the circuit's thick high-gain fuzz tones"1. It sits in the family tree alongside the full Algal Bloom Modified and the Algal Bloom 4k, sharing the same lineage: FuzzHugger describes that circuit as starting with "FuzzHugger's classic chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz" and enhancing its best qualities234.

The pedal is currently listed as Out of Stock on FuzzHugger's site, at a list price of $149.005. FuzzHugger covers it with what the maker calls an "Endless, transferrable warranty, free parts and labor on repairs"5.

The controls: Headroom, Bias, Voltage and Level

The Modified 4k keeps four knobs, each doing a distinct job in the circuit. FuzzHugger's own descriptions of what they do15:

ControlWhat it does
HeadroomReduces clipping and opens up as you turn right, shifting to a hot-yet-clear tone with more clarity and definition1
BiasSets your overall hotness and thickness. Scratches when adjusted1
VoltageFull voltage when right, anywhere between 9V and 18V depending on what you feed it, and reducing voltage as you turn it down, relaxing gain levels and response. Down to just a few volts full-left5
LevelVolume5

The Voltage knob is the star for players who like the "dying battery" sound: it is a built-in voltage sag control, so you can starve the circuit down to a few volts without actually feeding it less from the supply. The Headroom control works at the opposite end of the equation, backing off the clipping for a clearer, more open drive561.

One thing to know before you twist knobs mid-riff: the Bias knob is noisy. FuzzHugger is upfront about this on every version of the pedal, stating that it "Scratches when adjusted"1. The same note appears on the full Algal Bloom Modified and the standard Algal Bloom, where the maker writes that Bias "Sets your overall hotness and thickness, from lower gain to higher gain than ever before"7. It is a trait of the circuit, not a defect in a particular unit, so set it between songs rather than during one.

"Bias: Sets your overall hotness and thickness. (Scratches when adjusted.)"

Power: 9V to 18V, no battery

The Modified 4k requires a 9V to 18V DC center-negative adapter, which is not included, and it takes no batteries at all5. That has two practical consequences for a pedalboard: you need a free 9V output (center-negative, the standard on most supplies) from the start, and there is no battery fallback if power is unavailable. The wide 9V to 18V input range means it can also run at higher voltage for more headroom, and the Voltage knob then lets you dial that back down from inside the pedal5.

DC power only. The Algal Bloom Modified 4k has no battery compartment and ships without an adapter, so a center-negative 9V to 18V supply is required5.

Versions and finishes of the Algal Bloom

FuzzHugger builds the Algal Bloom family in small runs with a rotating set of finishes, and the Modified 4k has appeared in several configurations85:

  • A graphic deluxe-finish version at a sale price of $148.00, offered as a cosmetic sale with a minor clear coat imperfection1
  • A horizontal burlap deluxe-finish version at a sale price of $142.00, also a cosmetic sale, with a few very minor inconsistencies in the clear coat and slight waviness at the clear coat edges in a couple spots8
  • A prototype graphic version with no added finish, listed at $149.005

The standard finish treatment across the range is what FuzzHugger calls a "Deluxe thick acrylic finish"5, and one-of-a-kind burlap versions of the Algal Bloom Modified carry "a special 5-layer finish, with lovely depth and colors" and silver knob labels4. The 4k versions also get silver knob labels6.

The Modified 4k's 2.7 x 3.7 aluminum enclosure5 is the small box in the family. The full Algal Bloom Modified uses a larger 3.7 x 4.7 enclosure9, which is what you would expect given its bigger control set.

The 4k and the full Modified compared

The difference between the Modified 4k and the full Algal Bloom Modified is mostly how much of the circuit's control set you get. The Modified 4k carries four knobs: Headroom, Bias, Voltage and Level5. The full Algal Bloom Modified carries the fuller set, which on FuzzHugger's 2-in-1 pairing is listed for the Algal Bloom Modified side as Highs, Thick, Push, Voltage, Gain and Level10, and it uses the larger 3.7 x 4.7 enclosure109.

On the sound side, FuzzHugger describes the 4k-generation circuit as letting you "Dial in more gain and thickness than ever before," with a slightly higher-fi character, lower overall noise levels and a touch more sustain6. The same pages note the Push knob found on fuller versions "boosts, adding gain, sustain, and brightness," behaving more aggressively at higher-gain settings and more subtly at lower ones11, and that the Thick knob lets you push the bias further in either direction10. The 4k folds those functions into its Bias and Headroom controls rather than giving each its own knob.

Where it sits in the Algal Bloom family

The family tree, as FuzzHugger's pages describe it: the Algal Bloom is the original "chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz"4. The Algal Bloom Modified starts with that circuit and enhances its best qualities12. The Algal Bloom 4k is a variant of the Modified2, and the Modified 4k is the four-knob, small-box take on it5. From there the range branches into 2-in-1 pairings such as the Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom and the Algal Bloom & Blend, which adds a clean blend and a seven-knob control set of Highs, Thick, Push, Voltage, Head, Gain Fuzz Level and Clean Level.

Questions

What is the difference between the Algal Bloom 4k and 7k?

The 4k keeps four controls, Headroom, Bias, Voltage and Level, in a smaller 2.7 x 3.7 inch enclosure. The 7k carries the fuller control set, including Highs, Thick, Push and Gain, in a larger 3.7 x 4.7 inch enclosure. Both are built on the Algal Bloom Modified circuit, which FuzzHugger describes as its classic chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz with enhanced qualities.

Why does the Bias knob scratch on the Algal Bloom?

FuzzHugger's own product pages state plainly that the Bias knob scratches when adjusted. It is a characteristic of the circuit, not a fault in an individual unit. The knob sets the overall hotness and thickness of the fuzz, from lower gain to higher gain, so the scratch is simply part of dialing that control in.

Can the Algal Bloom Modified 4k run on a battery?

No. FuzzHugger specifies DC power only, with no batteries. The pedal requires a 9V to 18V center-negative adapter, which is not included, so it needs a spot on a power supply from day one and cannot run standalone on a pedalboard without one.

Is the FuzzHugger Algal Bloom still made?

As of late October 2026, FuzzHugger's product pages list the Algal Bloom Modified 4k, the Algal Bloom 4k, the Algal Bloom Modified and the Algal Bloom Modified 7k all as Out of Stock. FuzzHugger builds pedals in small runs with limited-availability finishes, so listings going out of stock is normal for the range.
