The FuzzHugger Algal Bloom LTD 5-knob is a limited-run fuzz and overdrive pedal from FuzzHugger, built as a five-knob take on the company's Algal Bloom circuit. FuzzHugger describes the Algal Bloom family as its "classic chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz," and says of the LTD that it is "still flexible, from thick and overdriven to many lower-gain settings"¹². The maker positions the Thick knob as the heart of that range: it takes the pedal "from fuzzy overdrives to fat overdriven fuzz"¹.

A fuzzy overdrive to fat fuzz in a five-knob box

The Algal Bloom line sits between overdrive and fuzz: FuzzHugger calls it chord-friendly, overdriven fuzz, meaning the character stays usable with chords rather than collapsing into a smeared wall¹. The LTD is a five-knob version of that circuit in a limited run, and FuzzHugger is upfront about the trade-off in the smaller control set. In the maker's words:

For a player, that means the LTD covers the same fuzzy-overdrive to fat-fuzz territory, with slightly less of the clean-up and clipping-shaping range that the full six-knob layout offers¹.

The controls

FuzzHugger does not list the LTD's five knobs individually on its page, but the control set is drawn from the standard Algal Bloom layout, which the maker documents across the family. The standard 6-knob set runs Highs, OD (Push), Thick, Voltage, Clip (Headroom) and Level³.

Two of these deserve a note for a beginner. The Voltage knob is a sag control: the Algal Bloom accepts 9 to 18 volts, and turning the knob down starves the circuit to relax the gain and response, the way a dying battery changes a fuzz's character³²⁶. And on some Algal Bloom units the thickness control, labeled Bias on certain versions, is described by the maker as setting "your overall hotness and thickness, from lower gain to higher gain than ever before," with the caveat that it "scratches when adjusted"⁵. That scratch is a known trait of the control, not a fault in an individual unit.
