The FuzzHugger Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom is a fuzz pedal that packs two complete Algal Bloom fuzzes into a single enclosure. FuzzHugger describes it as "two full Algal Blooms, in one box," with each side running as an independent effect1. The idea is simple: instead of carrying two Algal Bloom pedals and stacking them with patch cables, you get both in one double-width box, and you can run them as two channels or feed one into the other1.

The standard version is offered as a pre-order at $285.00, with a maximum 6 to 8 week ship time1. A Deluxe Finish version, a custom-painted variant, has also been offered2.

Two full Algal Blooms in one box

Each side of the 2-in-1 is a full Algal Bloom fuzz, not a stripped-down shared circuit. FuzzHugger's product page calls it "two independent 7-knob effects, two full Algal Blooms, in one box"1. The Deluxe Finish listing describes the same pedal as two independent 6-knob effects2; both versions of the control list appear below.

The two ways to use it:

  • As two channels: set each Algal Bloom differently and switch between them, one fuzz voice per side1.
  • Stacked: run one effect into the other, which FuzzHugger frames as something to experiment with, fuzz into fuzz1.

Because each effect has its own dedicated input and output jacks, you are not locked into either arrangement. FuzzHugger notes that the independent ins and outs give you the option of placing each effect anywhere in the chain1, so one Algal Bloom could sit before your overdrive and the other after it, connected with patch cables.

The controls

Each Algal Bloom side carries the same control set. FuzzHugger's listings give two versions of the knob list, and the disagreement is unresolved, so both are shown here134.

ControlWhat FuzzHugger says it does
GainSets the fuzz gain level
HighsShapes the top end
ThickAdjusts low-end thickness
PushBoosts, adding gain, sustain, and brightness1
Power / VoltageReduces voltage to relax gain and response1
HeadroomSets headroom / clipping character
LevelSets the output volume

The 7-knob listing gives each effect Gain, Highs, Thick, Push, Power, Headroom and Level1. The 6-knob Deluxe Finish listing gives Highs, Thick, Push, Voltage, Headroom and Level on each effect4. The Push knob is the one FuzzHugger explains in detail: it boosts, adding gain, sustain and brightness, behaving more aggressively at higher-gain settings, where the last turn gets compressed and splattery, and more subtly at lower-gain settings, where it increases brightness and response or attack1.

The Voltage (or Power) knob works with the wide power range. The pedal accepts 9 to 18 volts, and the knob lets you pull the voltage back down, which FuzzHugger says relaxes the gain and response1, a sagging, battery-dying character without needing a battery.

Power and connections

This pedal is DC power only, with no battery option, on both the standard and Deluxe Finish versions12. One power jack powers both effects1, so a single 9V supply runs the whole box.

Power and connection facts:

  • Voltage range: 9V to 18V DC1
  • Batteries: none, on any version1
  • Power jacks: one jack powers both effects1
  • Inputs and outputs: each effect has its own dedicated in and out jacks, so each can be placed anywhere in the chain1

The independent jacks are the feature that separates this from a simple dual-footswitch box. Since each fuzz is a self-contained circuit with its own connections, you can route them in series, in parallel-ish arrangements with other pedals between them, or use just one and leave the other idle135.

The Deluxe Finish and other 2-in-1 versions

The Deluxe Finish is a custom-painted version of the same 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom, offered as a limited custom unit12. It carries the same 9 to 18V DC-only power requirement, no batteries, and the same 7.4" x 4.7" enclosure, the size of two standard enclosures set side by side2.

FuzzHugger has built the 2-in-1 format around other Algal Bloom family circuits as well61:

2-in-1 versionWhat it pairs
Algal Bloom + Doom BloomA full Algal Bloom and a full Doom Bloom6
Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom (Deluxe Finish)Same pairing, deluxe finish; sale unit's clear coat has a few very minor imperfections7
Algal Bloom Mod vs Algal Bloom OAlgal Bloom Modified and Algal Bloom O, in a Deluxe Clear Finish8

The Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom pairing follows the same design logic: two independent effects in one 7.4" x 4.7" box, each with dedicated in and out jacks, one power jack for both (with an optional second jack available by request), and a 9 to 18V range with a Voltage knob61. Its Algal Bloom side carries Highs, Push, Gain, Thickness, Voltage, Clipping/Headroom and Level, while the Doom Bloom side adds a Lows control6. The Mod vs O version splits the difference between two Algal Bloom variants, with the Modified side carrying Highs, Thick, Push, Voltage, Gain and Level, and the O side swapping a Headroom control in place of Gain8.

All of these 2-in-1 units share the same footprint and the same run-as-channels-or-stack-one-into-the-other concept, so the choice between them comes down to which two circuits you want in the box371.

Questions

Does the FuzzHugger 2-in-1 Algal Bloom take batteries?

No. FuzzHugger specifies DC power only, with no battery option, for both the standard and Deluxe Finish versions. You need a power supply feeding the single DC jack, which powers both effects in the box.

Can I run the two Algal Blooms into each other?

Yes. FuzzHugger says you can run the two effects as two channels, or experiment with running one into the other. Because each side has its own input and output jacks, you can also place each one anywhere else in your signal chain.

Can the 2-in-1 Algal Bloom run at 18 volts?

Yes. The pedal accepts 9 to 18 volts DC. Each effect also has a Voltage (or Power) knob that reduces the voltage internally, which relaxes the gain and response for a looser, more sagging fuzz character.

How big is the FuzzHugger 2-in-1 enclosure?

The enclosure measures 7.4 by 4.7 inches, which FuzzHugger describes as the size of two standard pedal enclosures set side by side. Plan pedalboard space accordingly, as it is roughly a double-width box.
