The FuzzHugger Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom Mod vs Algal Bloom O is a dual fuzz pedal that puts two versions of the Algal Bloom circuit in one enclosure: the modern Algal Bloom Modified on the left and the older Algal Bloom O gain structure on the right. FuzzHugger calls it a first-of-its-kind 2-in-1 for the company, built specifically so you can compare and contrast the older and newer gain structures side by side1.

The idea is straightforward. Rather than choosing between the current Algal Bloom sound and the vintage one, you get both, each with its own set of knobs and its own input and output jacks. You can use them as two separate fuzz channels on a board, or run one into the other for stacked fuzz textures1.

This pedal is listed on the FuzzHugger site as of late October 20261. The other 2-in-1 Algal Bloom pairings include the Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom deluxe finish version2 and the Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom deluxe finish version3.

Two Algal Bloom fuzzes in one box

The Algal Bloom is FuzzHugger's long-running fuzz design, and this pedal is essentially a side-by-side archive of where it has been and where it is now. The left side holds the modern/current Algal Bloom circuit, which FuzzHugger describes as flexible, versatile, and tweaked for low noise and sustain. The right side holds the older gain and clipping structure of the Algal Bloom O1.

In the maker's own words:

"Compare and contrast the older and newer gain structures, and moreover, just flood yourself with tonal options"
FuzzHugger Effects, product page1

Because the two circuits are independent, the pedal works two ways. You can treat the sides as two channels, switching between the modern and vintage fuzz sounds, or you can experiment with running one into the other, stacking the older and newer gain structures for a more extreme combined fuzz1.

The controls on each side

Each side has its own control set, and the two sets are not identical, which reflects the circuit differences between the versions1.

SideControls
Algal Bloom Modified (left)Highs, Thick, Push, Voltage, Gain, Level1
Algal Bloom O (right)Gain and Push (formerly Bloom), which ground out when turned down1

On the Modified side, the six knobs cover the usual fuzz territory: Gain and Level for the amount and volume of the fuzz, Push for driving the front of the circuit, Highs and Thick for shaping the top and body, and Voltage for sag-style response1.

The O side is a different story. It keeps the older gain and clipping structure, and its Gain and Push knobs, the latter formerly called Bloom, ground out when turned down, meaning they can take the signal all the way to silence rather than just reducing the effect1.

How the two sides differ in sound

FuzzHugger's own description of the difference between the sides:

"Slightly gainier and noisier at the extremes, and cleans/slims up a bit more but with some fizzle."
FuzzHugger Effects, on the Algal Bloom O side1

In other words, the O side is the rawer of the two. It gets slightly gainier and noisier when pushed hard, and it cleans up and slims down a bit more when you back off, though with some fizzle in the cleaned-up sound. The Modified side, by contrast, is the refined version: flexible, versatile, and tweaked for low noise and sustain1. For a player, that means the O side leans toward vintage fuzz character with its quirks, while the Modified side is the everyday, lower-noise take on the same circuit. You can read more about each circuit on the Algal Bloom and Algal Bloom Modified pages.

Power and connections

The wiring arrangement is what makes this pedal flexible:

  • Each side has its own input and output jacks1.
  • The two sides share a single power jack1.
  • DC power only, no batteries1.

The independent inputs and outputs are the key feature. Because each fuzz circuit has its own jacks, you are not locked into a fixed internal order. You can run the two sides as two channels into different paths, or place each side anywhere in a larger chain, with other effects before or between them1. The shared power jack keeps the power wiring simple: one DC supply feeds both circuits, and there is no battery option, so this is a pedalboard pedal rather than something you can run standalone1.

Other 2-in-1 pairings

FuzzHugger has applied the same 2-in-1 concept to other combinations of its fuzz circuits. The Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom puts two full Algal Blooms in one box, two independent effects that can be run as two channels or one into the other, each with dedicated input and output jacks2. The Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom pairs a full Algal Bloom with a full Doom Bloom in the same arrangement4.

Those pairings follow the same connection scheme as the Mod vs O version: one power jack powers both sides, though on the Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom version FuzzHugger notes that, by request, each side can be given its own power jack3. The Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom also carries a larger control set per side, with the Algal Bloom side offering Highs, Push, Gain, Thickness, Voltage, Clipping/Headroom, and Level, and the Doom Bloom side offering Volt, Push, Thickness, Highs, Lows, Clipping/Headroom, and Level4.

The Mod vs O version stands apart from those pairings in one way: instead of combining two different circuit families, it puts two generations of the same circuit in one box, which is what makes it a direct comparison tool for Algal Bloom fans1.

Questions

Does the FuzzHugger 2-in-1 Algal Bloom take a battery?

No. The Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom Mod vs Algal Bloom O runs on DC power only, with no battery option, so you will need a power supply. The two sides share a single power jack, so one supply feeds both fuzz circuits.

Can the two sides be used at once?

Yes. Each side has its own input and output jacks, so you can run the two fuzzes as separate channels, or run one into the other to stack them. Because the jacks are independent, you can also place each side anywhere in a larger signal chain.

What is the difference between Algal Bloom Mod and Algal Bloom O?

The Modified side is the modern Algal Bloom circuit, which FuzzHugger describes as flexible, versatile, and tweaked for low noise and sustain. The O side keeps the older gain and clipping structure, which is slightly gainier and noisier at the extremes and cleans up a bit more, with some fizzle.

Does each side have its own jacks?

Yes. Each side has its own input and output jacks, which is what lets you run the two effects as two channels or feed one into the other. The one shared connection is power: a single power jack feeds both sides.
