The FuzzHugger Double Doom is a 2-in-1 fuzz pedal from FuzzHugger Effects that puts two complete Doom Bloom fuzz circuits in a single enclosure. Each Doom Bloom is separately footswitchable and has its own input and output jacks, so you can run the two fuzzes one after the other, or place each one at a different point in your signal chain1.

FuzzHugger describes the Doom Bloom sound as one that "generates a wide-range of overdriven fuzz and distortions. Rich, thick, clipped, yet surprisingly chord-friendly"1. The pedal sits in a 3.7 x 4.7 aluminum enclosure with top-mounted jacks1.

Two Doom Bloom fuzzes in one enclosure

The core idea of the Double Doom is simple: instead of one fuzz, you get two of the same fuzz, each fully independent. FuzzHugger's product page describes "two separately footswitchable Doom Blooms, each with their own in/out jacks (run each successively or 'place' each wherever in your chain)"1.

That wiring gives the pedal two distinct uses:

  • Stacked: run one Doom Bloom into the other for cascaded gain, thickening a low-gain setting on one with extra drive from the other1.
  • Placed: because each circuit has its own jacks, you can put one fuzz before, say, a delay and the other after it, or split them across different loops, without buying two separate pedals1.

The Double Doom is not the only dual-circuit pedal FuzzHugger offers. The FuzzHugger Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Doom Bloom pairs a full Doom Bloom with a full Algal Bloom in one box, described by the maker as "two independent 7-knob effects"3, with a later Deluxe Finish version carrying the same pairing as two independent 6-knob effects4. There is also a Custom 2-in-1 Algal Bloom + Algal Bloom that doubles the Algal Bloom instead. The Double Doom differs from all of these by doubling the Doom Bloom circuit specifically, the darker, low-heavy voice of the family.

The controls

Each Doom Bloom side carries six knobs: Push, Thick, Highs, Lows, Headroom and Level1. FuzzHugger's control descriptions for the circuit:

ControlWhat it does
PushCascades extra gain into the main stage, increasing drive, brightness and nastiness; the last turn goes compressed and splatty; at lower gain settings it is more subtle but still adds extra drive, brightness and responsiveness5
ThickAdjusts overall gain, thickness, overdrive and sustain1
HighsSmooths to dampens highs activity; most highs to the right1
LowsIncreases lows as you turn right5
HeadroomReduces clipping and opens up as you turn right, adding clarity and definition5
LevelSets the output volume of that side1

The Headroom control is the one that sets the Doom Bloom apart from simpler fuzzes: rather than a fixed clipping character, you can dial clipping down and open the circuit up for a clearer, more defined sound, then close it back down for a thicker, more compressed fuzz5. Combined with the separate Highs and Lows knobs, each side of the Double Doom can be voiced independently, which matters when you are stacking the two circuits.

Algal Bloom roots and the Deluxe Clear Finish editions

The Doom Bloom circuit grew out of FuzzHugger's Algal Bloom. FuzzHugger describes the Doom Bloom as "shapable and voiced with more lows than the Algal Bloom"1. The DIY community at Guitar FX Layouts, which published a vero layout of the circuit in November 2016, put it this way:

"The Doom Bloom reimagines Algal Bloom with new controls, more lows, bite, mass, and more available headroom6."

The Double Doom itself is a limited edition in what FuzzHugger calls the Deluxe Clear Finish, Graphic version5. The same Deluxe Clear Finish treatment appears on the single Doom Bloom Graphic Deluxe Finish pedals785 and on the Custom Double Algal Bloom785. The maker notes that the Double Doom's clear coat has "a couple VERY minor imperfections," and the pedal was offered as a cosmetic sale on that basis1.

The Double Doom is a limited edition, so availability depends on the maker's small-batch runs1.

Power and warranty

The Double Doom requires a 9V to 18V DC center-negative adapter, which is not included, and it takes no batteries1. The 9V to 18V range means it works with a standard 9V pedalboard supply and also accepts higher-voltage supplies, which on many fuzz designs changes the headroom and clipping character. FuzzHugger covers the pedal with an endless, transferrable warranty that includes free parts and labor on repairs1.

Questions

Does the FuzzHugger Double Doom take a battery?

No. FuzzHugger states plainly that the Double Doom uses no batteries. It runs only on a 9V to 18V DC center-negative adapter, which is not included with the pedal, so you need a power supply before you can use it.

Can the two Doom Blooms be used separately?

Yes. The Double Doom holds two separately footswitchable Doom Bloom circuits, and each has its own input and output jacks. You can run them one after the other in series, or place each one wherever you want in your signal chain, since they are wired as independent effects.

What power supply does the Double Doom need?

It requires a 9V to 18V DC center-negative adapter, which is not included. The 9V to 18V range means it accepts a standard 9V pedal supply and can also run at higher voltages. No battery option is available.

What is the Double Doom's warranty?

FuzzHugger covers the Double Doom with an endless, transferrable warranty that includes free parts and labor on repairs. Because it is transferrable, the coverage passes to a new owner if you sell the pedal.
