Fuzzrocious Tyrannochorus

The Fuzzrocious Tyrannochorus is a chorus pedal with a fuzz built into it. As Delicious Audio put it when the pedal was announced, "This device is actually a fuzz embedded in a chorus circuit," and the New Jersey-based builder's own description is a "chorus with gated fuzz in wet loop."¹ That arrangement matters for how you use it: a chorus effect always blends part of the dry signal with the modulated signal, and here the fuzz only affects the wet, modulated part. Your clean tone stays clean, while the chorus side carries the fuzz.¹

How it works

Because a chorus needs part of the dry sound mixed with the modulated one, the fuzz in the Tyrannochorus is placed so it only affects the wet chorus signal. The result is a clean dry tone underneath a fuzzed, modulated layer, rather than a fuzzed signal that is then chorused.¹

The pedal has two footswitches. The chorus switch engages the effect, and a separate Fuzz footswitch engages or disengages the fuzz. With the fuzz off, the Tyrannochorus works as a clean, traditional chorus pedal. The fuzz cannot be used on its own: it only runs inside the chorus.¹

Power and enclosure

The Tyrannochorus fits a 1590BB enclosure, which Fuzzrocious describes as a way of squeezing a lot of circuitry into a small footprint to save space on a pedalboard. It runs on 9V DC center negative power only.¹

If you are comparing it with other modulated effects, it sits apart from a standard chorus pedal because of the fuzz in the wet loop, and it is a different animal from a straight fuzz pedal, which colors the whole signal¹.
