The Genzler Amplification re/Q is a dual-function equalization pedal for bass and guitar, and the second pedal in Genzler's bass pedal line. It puts two separate tone-shaping networks in one box: a high-pass filter and low-pass filter pair, and a five-band graphic EQ, each with its own on/off footswitch so you can use either or both at once12. RockBoard's PedalPedia calls it a "swiss army knife" of tone control1. Premier Guitar reported its launch in October 2021, with shipping from mid November 2021 at a USA MAP of $244.993.

A dual-function EQ: filters plus a five-band network

The re/Q's two halves are independent. The filter network gives you a high-pass filter and a low-pass filter with on/off switching, letting you trim sub-bass rumble below the fundamentals you want and roll off treble above the range you use. The EQ network is a five-band graphic with its own on/off switch, so it can sit in the chain as a set-and-forget curve you kick in only when needed12.

The five EQ bands and their center frequencies:

BandCenter frequency
LOW90 Hz
LOW MID250 Hz
MID630 Hz
HIGH MID1.3 kHz
HIGH2.6 kHz

Each band offers +/- 12dB of cut or boost2, a range Bass Musician Magazine's reviewer Jake Wolf confirmed in his 2022 review of the pedal line4. A separate EQ Output Level control gives +/- 9dB of overall level trim, so you can compensate for the volume change a big EQ move causes2.

Because the two networks switch separately, a player can leave the filters always on to clean up the signal feeding the rest of the board, and treat the five-band EQ as a second, footswitchable voicing. That is the "dual function" of the name: filtering and equalization as two distinct tools rather than one combined curve12.

Headroom depends on the supply voltage. At 9V the maximum input level is +5dBu and the maximum output level is +9dBu; at 18V those figures rise to +10dBu in and +20dBu out2. For a bass player running hot active pickups or stacking boosts, the higher voltage buys cleaner headroom before the EQ clips.

Designers and the redux collaboration

The re/Q is the second pedal from what RockBoard's PedalPedia calls the "redux collaboration"1. That collaboration brought Jeff Genzler and engineer Andy Field back together to develop the company's line of bass and guitar effect pedals2. Field is a former Genz Benz engineer; Jeff Genzler founded Genz Benz amplification in 19844.

Genzler Amplification itself was founded later by Jeff and his wife Catherine, along with Scott Andres as principal engineer5. Before the pedal line, the company was known for its amplification products: the Bass Array cabinet designs, the Magellan series of bass amplification, Acoustic Array combos, and the Nu Classic series of bass cabinets5.

The re/Q is the second pedal from the "redux collaboration" between Jeff Genzler and engineer Andy Field, and the second model in the Genzler Amplification bass pedal line, a companion to the 4 ON THE FLOOR Classic Overdrive3.

Power and connections

The re/Q accepts power supplies from 9VDC to 18VDC of the low-noise type, in either polarity, with the pedal auto-detecting the plug's polarity, and draws a maximum of 40mA2. No power supply is included in the box2.

The auto-detecting polarity input means both center-negative and center-positive supplies work, so the re/Q can share a daisy chain or isolated supply with pedals of either convention. The 9V to 18V range also means a standard 9V supply works, with the higher voltage giving more headroom2.

Questions

Is the Genzler re/Q analog or digital?

It is all analog. Genzler Amplification describes the re/Q as an all-analog multi-function high pass filter, low pass filter, and 5-band EQ pedal, with no digital conversion anywhere in the signal path.

What power supply does the Genzler re/Q use?

It runs on 9VDC to 18VDC from a low-noise supply, drawing a maximum of 40mA, and auto-detects either power polarity, so center-positive and center-negative supplies both work. No power supply is included with the pedal.

Who designed the Genzler re/Q?

The re/Q comes from Genzler Amplification's redux collaboration, which reunited company founder Jeff Genzler with engineer Andy Field, who had worked together at Genz Benz before Jeff founded that company in 1984.

Where can I find the Genzler re/Q manual?

Genzler Amplification hosts the re/Q owner's manual as a PDF on its website, at genzleramplification.com in the wp-content uploads section, filed as the RE-Q Owners Manual dated 3-9-2023.
