The Great Eastern FX Design-A-Drive is a low- to medium-gain overdrive pedal from UK builder Great Eastern FX, designed by David Greeves123. Its central idea is that no single overdrive voice suits every guitar and amp combination, so instead of a fixed tone stack it gives you a set of controls that reshape the pedal's frequency response on the fly. As RockBoard's PedalPedia puts it, it is "an overdrive you can redesign on the fly to deliver exactly what you, your guitar and your amp require"4.
The pedal is built around a proprietary tone circuit that aims to remove the hit-and-miss tonal compatibility between an overdrive pedal and an amp5. Delicious Audio relayed the builder's intent: "We wanted to create a pedal that let you be the designer, changing the frequency response on the fly to suit whatever guitar and amp they are using"1. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Dan called it "a super flexible overdrive" when they demoed it as one of four new-to-them pedals6.
The controls: gain, edge, level and the six-way width switch
The Design-A-Drive has three knobs and one switch: Gain, Edge, Level, and a six-position Width selector2. What sets it apart from a conventional overdrive is how the Edge and Width controls work together to re-voice the pedal rather than simply trimming highs or lows.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Wide-ranging drive control, from lightly frothy at around 9 o'clock to borderline fuzzy when cranked2 |
| Edge | Handles the top end, adjusting two separate filters at once: a gentle treble roll-off and a more intense cut in the high presence region, while also subtly affecting the aggressiveness of the hard-clipping diodes57 |
| Level | Sets output volume; with gain down, works with Gain for boosting57 |
| Width | Six-position rotary switch, from "Thin" to "Fat", that reshapes the midrange response and the contour of the low end17 |
The Edge knob is the more unusual of the two tone controls. Premier Guitar explains that it "controls the top end of the frequency spectrum, simultaneously adjusting two separate filters, a gentle treble roll-off and a more intense cut in the high presence region, as well as subtly affecting the aggressiveness of the circuit's hard-clipping diodes"7. MusicRadar describes the same dual-filter behavior, noting that the high-presence filtering in turn interacts with how the pedal clips your signal5.
The Width switch deals in midrange. Each of its six positions moves from a thin response to progressively fatter ones5, and Guitar.com's reviewer found it "gradually adding body to the tone in a way that feels much more musical than cranking a conventional bass knob"2.
Because the Gain and Level controls are wide ranging, the pedal covers a broad spread of uses. MusicRadar notes the pre-gain and output levels "function in a fairly traditional fashion, offering everything from transparent boosting to harmonic overdrive"5, and Premier Guitar adds that with the gain turned down it can serve as a powerful tone shaper and clean boost7. The circuit itself is a hard-clipper, with the clipping routed to ground3.
Guitar Pedal X's reviewer logged his preferred settings as "Gain @ noon, Edge at c. 2 o'c, Level @ 3 o'c, Width @ 2nd notch!"3
How it compares and who uses it
Great Eastern FX is also known for the Small Speaker Overdrive, and Guitar Pedal X compared the two siblings directly. Both are hard-clippers with the clipping routed to ground3, but the reviewer heard the Design-A-Drive as "rawer, grittier and fuzzy-edged", closest to the sound of early 80's garage rock, and judged it "more of a live arena style weapon of choice - with plenty of texture, edge and bite, to cut through the band mix"3.
The pedal has a documented user in Peter Stroud, Sheryl Crow's guitarist, who uses it in a rig covering country, heartland rock, folk, blues and poppier material3.
What reviewers said
Reviews across the press agreed on the pedal's flexibility. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis reviewed it as an overdrive pedal made in the UK, true bypass, powered by a 9-volt mains supply only, priced £2292. Delicious Audio introduced it as "a low- to medium-gain overdrive equipped with a couple of unique EQ controls, Edge and Width"1, and That Pedal Show demoed it on camera as one of four new pedals in a November 2022 episode6.
Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson highlighted "its ability to rapidly and easily adjust its profile to suit a certain playback scenarios" as the pedal's core strength3. Writing in Guitar.com in 2024, Richard Purvis compared its character to the Bleak District Electric Terra: "But its character is quite different, more silky, less bitey, so you're definitely allowed to own both"8.
Availability and price
The Design-A-Drive launched in July 2022 at £229 in the UK and $265 in the US5, prices confirmed by Delicious Audio in August 20231. It was available direct from the Great Eastern FX website and through the company's dealer network1.
The Design-A-Drive runs on a 9-volt mains supply only2, drawing 10mA at 9V DC center negative4, so there is no battery option.

Questions
Is the Great Eastern FX Design-A-Drive true bypass?
Yes. The Design-A-Drive is a true bypass pedal, so with the effect switched off your signal passes through without the circuit coloring it. It runs on a 9-volt mains supply only, so there is no battery option.
How much does the Design-A-Drive cost in the US?
The Design-A-Drive launched at $265 in the US, priced £229 including VAT in the UK. It was available direct from the Great Eastern FX website and through the company's dealer network.
Can the Design-A-Drive be used as a clean boost?
Yes. Premier Guitar notes that its wide-ranging Gain and Level controls mean that, with the gain turned down, the pedal works as a powerful tone shaper and clean boost. MusicRadar describes the pre-gain and output controls as offering everything from transparent boosting to harmonic overdrive.
What power supply does the Design-A-Drive need?
It runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug, drawing about 10mA, which is easy on a typical pedalboard power supply. Guitar.com's review notes it is powered by a 9-volt mains supply only, so it cannot run on a battery.
Where is the Design-A-Drive made?
The Design-A-Drive is made in the UK by Great Eastern FX, a British builder also known for the Small Speaker Overdrive. The pedal was designed by David Greeves, the company's founder.
Does Peter Stroud use the Design-A-Drive?
Yes. Peter Stroud, Sheryl Crow's guitarist, uses the Design-A-Drive in his rig, which covers country, heartland rock, folk, blues and poppier material. Guitar Pedal X describes him as famously using the pedal.
