The GUPtech SUN Scott Bynoe Edition is an artist edition of the GUP Tech SUN Noise Gate, a compact noise gate pedal made by GUP Tech in Saguenay, Québec, Canada. Announced on 12 August 2021, it carries the same gating circuit as the standard SUN in a gold etched enclosure, and it was listed as sold out on the maker's page the same day1.

What it is and how it differs from the standard SUN

GUPtech announced the edition with these words: "Here's the Scott Bynoe Artist edition of our SUN Noise Gate. Same gating power, cool gold etched color."1 In other words, the difference from the standard SUN is the finish, not the circuit. The SUN itself is the updated version of the GUP Tech GUUL, which the maker describes as having "same features with an updated DSP chip"2.

The internal Low/High threshold switch

The one control GUPtech highlights on this edition sits out of sight. The maker's page says: "There's a Low/High threshold switch inside the enclosure in case you miss some noise silencing power."1 A player who finds the gating too gentle with the pedal set normally can open the enclosure and move the switch to the High position for stronger silencing.

Because the threshold switch is inside the enclosure, changing it means taking the back plate off. It is not adjustable from the top panel while playing.

Wiring and placement

The SUN is built to sit at more than one point in a signal chain. GUPtech's page gives the options1:

  • Wire it directly in front of the amp, or in the FX loop, using the key input, "for even more hum annihilation"1
  • The pedal includes 4 jacks to wire it in the 3 or 4-wire method1

Placing a gate in the FX loop with a key input connection lets it read the noisier preamp signal while gating the loop's return, which is a common approach for high gain rigs. For how other gates handle this, see the noise gate pedal type page, or pedals such as the ISP Technologies ISP Decimator II G-String and the Fortin Amplification Zuul.

Power

The SUN Scott Bynoe Edition runs on 9VDC center negative and draws 38mA, according to GUPtech's product page1. There is no battery option mentioned, so a center negative DC supply with enough current headroom is needed.

Questions

What is the Scott Bynoe edition of the GUPtech SUN?

It is an artist edition of GUPtech's SUN noise gate pedal, announced on 12 August 2021. According to the maker, it has the same gating power as the standard SUN, with a cool gold etched color as the visible difference. It carries the same 9VDC center negative power, 38mA current draw, four-jack 3 or 4-wire wiring method and internal Low/High threshold switch as the standard SUN.

Is the SUN Scott Bynoe Edition sold out?

Yes. GUPtech's product page listed the Scott Bynoe Artist edition as sold out as of 12 August 2021, the same day the edition was announced. The standard SUN and other editions of the circuit have appeared in the maker's shop since.

Where is the threshold switch on the SUN Scott Bynoe Edition?

Inside the enclosure. GUPtech says there is a Low/High threshold switch inside the enclosure, in case a player misses some noise silencing power, so it is set with the back plate off rather than from the top panel while playing.

Can the SUN be placed in the effects loop?

Yes. GUPtech says the SUN can be wired directly in front of the amp, or in the FX loop using the key input, for even more hum annihilation. The pedal includes four jacks to wire it in the 3 or 4-wire method.

What power does the SUN Scott Bynoe Edition take?

9VDC center negative, with a power consumption of 38mA, according to GUPtech's product page. That rules out running it from a battery, so a center negative DC supply is required.

How does the Scott Bynoe edition differ from the standard SUN?

Only in appearance. GUPtech describes it as the same gating power with a cool gold etched color. The circuit, controls, wiring method, power requirements and internal Low/High threshold switch are those of the standard SUN noise gate.
