The GUUL was a noise gate pedal made by GUP Tech, a small builder whose pedals are made in Saguenay, Québec, Canada. A noise gate sits in your signal chain and mutes the signal when you stop playing, cutting hum and hiss from high-gain amps and pedalboards. The GUUL's distinguishing feature is a key input, which lets you wire it directly in front of the amp or in the FX loop for what the maker calls "even more hum annihilation."1
The GUUL is discontinued. In a July 2021 update, GUP Tech announced that its new SUN gate had replaced the GUUL, with the same features and an updated DSP chip, and that the GUUL would never be offered again.1
What it does
The GUUL silences the noise between notes. Its key input is the feature that sets it apart from a simple gate: by feeding the pedal a copy of the signal from before the noisy stages, it can be placed in front of the amp or in the FX loop and still track your playing accurately, which the maker describes as delivering "even more hum annihilation."1
The pedal's controls and connections:
- Key input: for use in front of the amp or in the FX loop, for extra hum reduction1
- Internal Low/High threshold switch: inside the enclosure, "in case you miss some noise silencing power," per the maker1
- Four jacks: to wire the pedal in the 3 or 4-wire method1
Versions and related pedals
GUP Tech also offered a Laser Etched edition of the GUUL for players after what the maker calls a more "Funny" looking pedal.1
The GUUL's successor, the GUP Tech SUN Noise Gate, carries the same features with an updated DSP chip.1 GUP Tech's current and past gates also include the GUP Tech MWAC Noise Gate and the GUP Tech Cool Gate.1
If you are comparing gates across makers, the Fortin Amplification Zuul and the ISP Technologies ISP Decimator II G-String are other key-input designs, while simpler one-knob gates include the MXR Smart Gate and the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor.
