The Ibanez Pentatone Gate PTGATE is a noise gate pedal, the kind of pedal that mutes the hiss and hum a guitar signal picks up, especially through high-gain distortion. What sets it apart is how little there is to operate: GuitarPlayer's buying guide describes it as offering "extreme simplicity," with "one knob and a switch, easy peasy"1.
The gate circuit is not new to the PTGATE. GuitarPlayer notes that it was "derived from the Pentatone preamp pedal, which featured a version of the noise gate that was so lauded" that Ibanez gave it its own enclosure1.
Controls
The PTGATE keeps its control panel to two items, described consistently by both press sources12:
| Control | Setting | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | Knob | Sets the level below which the gate closes and mutes the signal |
| Intensity | High / Low switch | Selects how hard the gate clamps down |
Guitar Pedal X's review lists the controls as "Threshold, Intensity : High / Low"2.
Where it sits among noise gates
Many noise gates offer several knobs for attack, release, decay and hold, which can take trial and error to dial in. The PTGATE takes the opposite approach: one knob to set where the gate closes, and a two-position switch to choose between a gentler or firmer gate action12. For players who want noise control without menu diving, that is the whole pitch.
It sits in a crowded field of compact gates, from the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor to the MXR Smart Gate and the TC Electronic Sentry. See the full Noise Gate Pedals type page for how the category works and what else is available.
