The Mr. Moto Trem-Verb from J. Rockett is a tremolo and reverb pedal in one box, pairing the two effects that vintage amplifiers carried together. J. Rockett describes it as "a very musical Tremolo with a super lush spring reverb as well"1. The tremolo side goes from a very subtle throb to a choppy rhythmic pulse, and the reverb side aims at the classic, lush spring sound of an early amp2.

The idea behind the pedal is rooted in amp history. As Delicious Audio noted when covering it, tremolo and reverb were the very first mass-produced non-gain effects for electric guitar, and their combination was originally found built into amplifiers over five decades ago23. The Mr. Moto gathers both into a single orange box.

How the two effects work together

The tremolo and reverb sections can be run independently or together, so the pedal works as a tremolo only, a reverb only, or both blended at once23. For reverb only, Pedal of the Day notes you can turn the Depth control all the way down and use the pedal on its own as a reverb3.

On the reverb side, the spring sound is the whole point. Delicious Audio describes it as sounding "like a classic and lush spring you'd find in a vintage amp"2, and Guitar.com called it "a lush, warm spring reverb that, when blended together with the tremolo, is handy if you're trying to emulate a vintage Fender amp"6. The reverb has just one control, a volume knob labeled Verb24.

Controls

ControlWhat it does
DepthSets the tremolo depth23
SpeedSets the tremolo rate2
WaveGradually changes the tremolo wave shape from sine to square2
VerbSets the spring reverb level24

The Wave knob is the tremolo's character control. Rather than offering fixed wave shapes, it blends continuously from a sine wave, which gives a smooth, rounded pulse, to a square wave, which gives the hard on/off chop associated with surf rock. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Dan described it as a pedal where "you can blend between a square wave and a triangle wave" tremolo, alongside a one-knob spring reverb7. Delicious Audio's 2023 guide likewise lists it as a tremolo with two waveform options and a fixed spring reverb5.

Pedal of the Day's reviewed setting gives a sense of how the knobs interact: Wave all the way left, Depth at 2 o'clock, and the reverb at 3 o'clock produced what the reviewer called a lush setting3.

The Speedswitch footswitch

The footswitch uses J. Rockett's proprietary Speedswitch system, which allows the part to be quickly replaced when it breaks2. For a player who gigs regularly, that means a failed footswitch is a swap rather than a repair.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day reviewed the Mr. Moto positively, summing it up as3:

"The Mr. Moto is everything you wish your amp had built in."

The reviewer found the pedal gave complete control over both effects overall, with the tremolo running from lush, beautiful tones to full-on surf rock3.

On That Pedal Show, Mick and Dan demoed the pedal as "a spring reverb one knob spring reverb and a three knob tremolo in one pedal"7, walking through how the tremolo's rate and depth knobs and the wave blend interact with the reverb level.

Where it came from

Press coverage of the Mr. Moto dates back to at least August 2018, when gearnews and Guitar.com both reported on the new J. Rockett pedal combining tremolo with spring reverb64. Delicious Audio then reported it as newly unveiled in June 20222, and Pedal of the Day reviewed it that same month2.

The Mr. Moto sits in J. Rockett's range alongside other vintage-amp-inspired effects, including the BOING Spring Reverb, a standalone spring reverb pedal.

Questions

Can the Mr. Moto Trem-Verb run tremolo and reverb separately?

Yes. The tremolo and reverb can be run independently or together, so you can use each effect on its own or blend both at once. Turning the Depth control all the way down leaves you with reverb only.

What does the wave shape knob do on the Mr. Moto?

The Wave knob gradually changes the shape of the tremolo wave from sine to square. A sine shape gives a smoother, rounder pulse, while a square shape gives a harder, choppier chop, and the knob blends between the two.

What is the J. Rockett Speedswitch footswitch?

Speedswitch is J. Rockett's proprietary footswitch system. It is designed so that if the footswitch breaks, the part can be quickly replaced rather than requiring a repair job or a new pedal.

Is the reverb on the Mr. Moto a spring sound?

Yes. J. Rockett describes it as a super lush spring reverb, and press coverage says it sounds like the classic, lush spring you would find in a vintage amp. A single Verb knob controls the reverb level.

Does the Mr. Moto have a square wave tremolo?

Yes. The Wave knob blends from a sine wave to a square wave tremolo, so full square wave chop is available at one end of the knob's range, with smoother shapes in between.
