The Jeds Peds Muff Fuzz kit is a DIY guitar effects pedal kit from Jeds Peds that recreates the classic EHX designed Muff Fuzz from the 1960s. Jeds Peds describes the effect as a much lower gain take on fuzz, giving out lovely low and medium gain tones, which places it closer to an overdrive-adjacent character than a full-on fuzz. The kit is supplied with a JP1590B enclosure, the one knobbed version, and you will need one knob for the build1.

Building it

Jeds Peds positions this as an accessible first project. The company calls it "a beginner level build it features our DIY friendly layout and board design", and backs that up with a detailed PDF build guide, top quality parts and the availability of its build support forum1.

Soldering is required. Full assembly is the builder's job, and Jeds Peds is clear about what that involves: "You will have to identify components, calculate resistor codes and be able to solder them into place."1 A beginner should expect to learn component identification and resistor color codes as part of the project, not just iron parts into a board.

Pre Built Kits from Jeds Peds carry a 1 to 4 week build time, so ordering one assembled rather than building it yourself means waiting for the shop to get to it1.

Kit versions

The kit is sold in five versions, so you can buy as much or as little as you want to source yourself1:

VersionWhat it includes
PCB OnlyJust the plain PCB
PCB & ComponentsPCB, onboard components and any pots and toggle switches
PCB & Components and off board partsAs above with off board components (foot switch, Jacks, 9v socket, LED)
Full KitAs above with undrilled enclosure
Full Kit & DrillingFull Kit with all the holes for a complete pedal, for a small surcharge

Drilling is an optional extra for the Full Kit. There is a small surcharge for it, and it covers all the holes needed for a complete pedal, so you can skip drilling the enclosure yourself if you would rather not1.

Where it sits in the Jeds Peds range

Jeds Peds sells several other DIY kits and pedals in the fuzz family, including the Jeds Peds Fuzz Face kit, the Jeds Peds Red Llama kit and the Jeds Peds Axis Fuzz kit, alongside ready-built pedals like the Jeds Peds Hyper Fluff and Jeds Peds Dark Meat Shed. The Muff Fuzz kit is the low gain option among them, described by the maker as a much lower gain effect than a conventional fuzz1.
