The Krozz Devices Airborn is an analog flanger pedal from Brazil. Krozz Devices describes it as a flanger "that will take you on a psychedelic journey on a fully analog circuit," built around a BBD (Bucket-Brigade Device), the analog delay-line chip design behind the classic flangers that, in the maker's words, "marked the history" of the effect. The pedal uses Panasonic/Matsushita MN3207 NOS (new old stock) chips, and the company says it prides itself on using the best components available1.

Positive and negative feedback

The Airborn's "+/-" toggle switch selects between positive feedback (+) and negative feedback (-), and the two modes behave very differently. In positive (or additive) feedback, the clean signal and the modulated signal are in phase and are added together; Krozz Devices says this is where most of the famous guitar tones are found. In negative (or subtractive) feedback, the modulated signal undergoes a phase inversion and is subtracted from the clean signal, producing a hollow character the maker compares to a "talk box," along with more eccentric timbres1.

Controls

ControlWhat it does
RateSets how fast the frequency range (set by Range) is swept. Clockwise is faster; counter-clockwise is slower and more "jet-plane-like"1
RangeSelects the extension of the frequency band the modulation travels through. Lower settings give a smaller range and more traditional tones; clockwise the sweep is larger and the effect deeper1
OxidationA frequency filter acting only on the modulated signal, interacting with Feedback. Open, the sound is more strident; counter-clockwise, the modulated signal's high frequencies are cut and the effect becomes more subtle1
LevelControls the effect volume. It avoids the volume loss typical of this circuit topology and can go above unity gain to boost your signal1
"+/-" switchSelects positive (+) or negative (-) feedback1
Filter-Flanger switch (internal)Locks (left) or unlocks (right) the oscillator. With the oscillator locked, the filter is static and its frequency range is set by the Range knob1

The Filter-Flanger switch is inside the pedal, not on the top panel, so changing between flanger and static filter modes means taking off the back plate.

Tones and what reviewers said

Krozz Devices says the Airborn can recreate iconic flanger tones, "ranging from the 'acid' and 'liquid' sounds of Gilmour to the famous 'jet plane' sounds of EVH," with the negative feedback mode adding eccentric timbres on top1. For players chasing those sounds, it sits alongside other analog flangers such as the MXR EVH117 Flanger, the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress and the Retro-Sonic Classic Analog Flanger; see the full range on the Flanger Pedals page.

Questions

What chip does the Krozz Airborn use?

The Airborn uses Panasonic/Matsushita MN3207 NOS (new old stock) bucket-brigade chips, according to the product page published by Delicious Audio. Bucket-brigade devices are the analog delay-line chips at the heart of classic flanger designs, and Krozz Devices says it prides itself on using the best components available.

Can the Krozz Airborn do Gilmour and Van Halen flanger sounds?

Krozz Devices says the pedal can recreate iconic flanger tones, ranging from the acid and liquid sounds of David Gilmour to the famous jet-plane sounds of EVH, and that most of those famous guitar tones live in the pedal's positive feedback mode. In negative feedback mode it also produces more eccentric timbres.

What does the Oxidation knob do?

Oxidation is a frequency filter that acts only on the modulated signal and interacts with the Feedback control. With the knob open the sound is more strident; turned counter-clockwise it cuts the high frequencies of the modulated signal and the effect becomes more subtle.

What is the internal switch on the Airborn for?

Inside the pedal there is a small Filter-Flanger switch that locks (left) or unlocks (right) the oscillator. With the oscillator locked, the filter becomes static and the frequency range where it acts is set by the position of the Range knob, turning the pedal into a static filter.

Is the Krozz Airborn analog?

Yes. Krozz Devices describes the Airborn as a flanger on a fully analog circuit, using a BBD (Bucket-Brigade Device) to produce its flanging, rather than digital modeling.
