The Lastgasp Art Laboratories Octavella Upper Octave Fuzz is a silicon fuzz pedal that generates an upper octave on top of the fuzzed note, placing it in the octave fuzz family alongside other fuzz pedals. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, reviewing it in May 2024, described it as "a silicon fuzz with a full, searing, complex texture" and called it "Definitely one of my most favourite Upper Octave Fuzz variants."1
Controls
The Octavella has four knobs1:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Level | Sets the output level |
| Tone | Shapes the tone |
| Gain | Sets the gain |
| F.Back | Sets feedback, which maxes out harmonics but causes feedback whistling if ridden too high |
The F.Back control is the one to watch: pushing it too high brings on feedback whistling, so it rewards a careful hand1.
Settings and sound
Karlsson's suggested starting point sits the Level and Gain knobs near 3 o'clock, Tone around 3:30 to 4 o'clock, and Feedback pretty much dead-center, pointing at the five, then tweaked by ear for maximum sear without artifacts1. Of the sound itself, he wrote: "It really has the most wonderful searing tonality."1
Price and availability
As of the May 2024 review, the Octavella sold for $199 from the Lastgasp Art Laboratories webstore, and for £179 from Joe's Pedals, the maker's UK dealer1.
Where it sits in the Lastgasp range
Lastgasp Art Laboratories builds a line of fuzzes with a circuit-bending streak, including the Super Oscillo Fuzz, the 46 Sooper Fuzz, the Gomorrah and the Lluna Oscillo Fuzz Drive. The Octavella is the maker's take on the upper octave fuzz variant within that range1.
