Lastgasp Art Laboratories 46 Sooper Fuzz

The Lastgasp Art Laboratories 46 Sooper Fuzz is a silicon fuzz pedal built on the Univox Super-Fuzz circuit, which Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson called "a superbly richly textured take on the Univox Super-Fuzz"¹. It carries four controls: Level, Tone, Gain and a Mode switch with two positions, MidBoost and MidScoop¹.

What it does

The Mode switch is the pedal's distinguishing control: position 1 is MidBoost and position 2 is MidScoop, giving two different midrange voicings of the same fuzz circuit¹. Karlsson's verdict on the sound: "Both modes produce blooming, percolating, cascading harmonic fuzz"¹. He found the combination of components sounds superb in either mode, and "particularly for me on the MidScoop setting"¹. His preferred MidScoop setting is Level maxed, Tone at 3 o'clock and Gain around 3 o'clock¹.

The circuit

The 46 Sooper Fuzz uses C1815 transistors together with a JRC4558DD opamp, a mix Karlsson describes as "somewhat different to the norm" for a Super-Fuzz style design¹. For comparison, the original Univox Super-Fuzz runs six transistor stages, Q1 through Q6, with Q4 and Q5 forming its octave section, per the Guitar FX Layouts technical analysis of the circuit². The original Super-Fuzz's Tone switch offers scooped and non-scooped positions, and the mid scoop capacitor in that circuit is 56nF, a value confirmed in the Guitar FX Layouts discussion². The 46 Sooper Fuzz's MidBoost/MidScoop switch carries that two-voicing idea forward as a front-panel mode selection.
