The Lazy J Cruiser Deuce is a handmade analog pedal that works as an overdrive, a booster, or something in between, depending on how it is set. The maker's stated aim for the design is simple: "The idea was to get the biggest, most dynamic lead tone from my amp without getting too loud."1 It sits in the broad family of overdrive pedals, but it is built to push an already-working tube amp rather than to create distortion on its own.

What it does

RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the Cruiser Deuce as an "OVERDRIVE BOOSTER", and describes each unit as "a Booster/Overdrive pedal in one, or, depending on the settings, something in between."1 In practice that means it can act as a clean-ish boost into a cranked amp, as a standalone overdrive, or anywhere between the two. Players comparing it with other drives may also find our Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer page useful background.

The circuit has no tone control. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel explain the reasoning: "there's no tone stack in it right it's just open game stages", which they say makes the pedal truly transparent and very dynamic.2 Instead of a tone knob, the pedal offers "three different levels of compression at the moment it's wide open", as Mick puts it during the demo.2

From the first Cruiser to the Deuce

The Deuce is not a new idea rushed to market. The designer says he "had the basic idea for these pedals in the mid 90s, and designed the first Cruiser back then." Of the circuit itself, he says: "The Drive circuit in the Cruiser has evolved a bit over the years, but the basic design has never changed."1

Who makes it

Lazy J is a small operation. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel note that "Jesse from Les J who makes the j20 app and j40 he makes these", meaning the same builder behind the J20 and J40 amplifiers builds the pedals.2 Players interested in that amp lineage may want to look at the Lazy J x ThorpyFX The J, a later amp-in-a-box pedal based on the J-20.

What reviewers said

That Pedal Show covered the Cruiser Deuce in a March 2016 episode comparing the Analog Man King Of Tone with six alternative overdrives, with the Lazy J segment beginning at 35:37.3 Their verdict was strong: "the laser J is completely unique and it's got a it's got such a dynamic thing to it", and they noted that plugging into it makes the King Of Tone start sounding mid-humped by comparison.2

Questions

Is the Lazy J Cruiser Deuce an analog pedal?

Yes. The maker lists the Cruiser Deuce as an analog circuit. It is also handmade with quality components, and the design is built around open gain stages with no tone stack, which is what gives it its transparent, dynamic character when driving a tube amp.

Who makes the Lazy J Cruiser Deuce?

The Cruiser Deuce is made by Lazy J. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel note that Jesse of Lazy J builds the pedals and also makes the J20 and J40 amplifiers.

Is the Cruiser Deuce a booster or an overdrive?

Both, depending on how it is set. The maker describes it as an overdrive booster, and says each one is a Booster/Overdrive pedal in one, or, depending on the settings, something in between.

Does the Cruiser Deuce have a tone control?

No tone stack. On That Pedal Show, Mick and Daniel point out that there is no tone stack in the circuit, just open gain stages, which they say makes it transparent and very dynamic. The pedal instead offers three different levels of compression.

Where can I find the Cruiser Deuce manual?

The maker's manual in English is available as a PDF from Lazy J's own site at lazyjprojects.com/Deuce.pdf.
