The Marshall JCM800 Overdrive is an overdrive pedal from Marshall, built to put the sound of the company's JCM800 amp on a pedalboard. Marshall says it "lets you unleash the 80s tone and dynamic response that made the JCM800 the amp of choice in rock and metal music"1. It has four controls for gain, sensitivity, tone, and volume2, and Thomann has listed it at $119.00 / £109.00 / 127.00€2.

What it does

The pedal is an overdrive inspired by the JCM800 amp, which MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley calls "the quintessential '80s hard-rock and metal guitar amp"4. Marshall's pitch is that it "replicate[s] the distinctive roar of the JCM800 amp by bringing it to your pedalboard"3. In other words, it is an amp-in-a-box pedal: a way to get JCM800-style grind at any volume, into a clean amp or in front of an already dirty one.

Gearnews's Julian Schmauch described its range as running from mild to aggressive:

"From gentle crunch to piercing leads the JCM 800 does it all. And the JCM 800 Overdrive, too."2

The pedal has four controls, for gain, sensitivity, tone and volume2. Marshall describes the set as "simple yet powerful tone controls"5.

ControlWhat it does
GainSets the amount of overdrive
SensitivityShapes how the pedal responds to your picking and guitar volume
ToneAdjusts the brightness
VolumeSets the output level

Power and hardware

The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, or on an internal battery with a play time of about 35 hours1. Guitar World noted the battery life when the series launched, saying the JCM800 was "crowned the endurance king thanks to its 35-hour battery life"6. An external power supply is not included with the pedal1.

The 35-hour play time applies when you are not using an external power supply, and no PSU ships in the box, so plan on supplying your own 9V DC center-negative power if you do not want to run on the battery1.

It has one 1/4" jack input and one 1/4" jack output, a black and gold enclosure, and weighs 0.74 kg1. Its body is 101mm (3.97") wide, 131mm (5.15") deep and 52mm (2") tall7.

Where it came from

Marshall gave the JCM800 Overdrive a black and gold enclosure and a single 1/4" jack input, running on 9 V DC (center negative)1. Thomann listed the pedal at 209 euros from January 25, 20252.

The JCM800 Overdrive is made in Vietnam and, per Marshall, designed and engineered in the UK1. Marshall markets it as coming "from the makers of the original"1, meaning the company that built the actual JCM800 amp.

Price

Marshall's US store lists the pedal at $129.99, discounted from $159.993. Thomann has listed it at $119.00 / £109.00 / 127.00€2, and Gearnews reported the JCM800 at 209 euros at Thomann from January 25, 202542.

Questions

Does the Marshall JCM800 Overdrive pedal take a battery?

Yes. The pedal runs on an internal battery with a play time of about 35 hours, and Guitar World called it the endurance king of the series for that reason. An external 9V DC power supply also works, but one is not included with the pedal.

Where is the Marshall JCM800 Overdrive pedal made?

The pedal is made in Vietnam. Marshall says it was designed and engineered in the UK, and markets it as coming from the makers of the original JCM800 amp.

What other pedals are in the Marshall Overdrive Series?

Marshall launched five overdrive pedals at NAMM 2025, each modeled on one of its amps: the 1959, DSL, JCM800, JCM900 and JVM. The JCM800 Overdrive sits alongside the Marshall 1959 Overdrive, DSL Overdrive, JCM900 Overdrive and JVM Overdrive.

Does the Marshall JCM800 pedal sound like the amp?

Marshall says the pedal replicates the distinctive roar of the JCM800 amp and its 80s tone and dynamic response, the qualities that made the amp a favorite in rock and metal. MusicRadar calls the JCM800 the quintessential 80s hard-rock and metal guitar amp. It is an overdrive pedal, not the amp itself.
