The Maxon CS505 Stereo Chorus is an analog stereo chorus pedal from Maxon, reviewed in the Reissue Series by Vintage Guitar magazine in November 2000. It is a purple box with a single input and two outputs, which can carry stereo, mono, or inverted mono signals. With two amplifiers, its modulation can produce more spacious sounds1.
Controls and stereo use
The CS505 keeps its control layout simple: two knobs, Speed and Width, set the speed and depth of the chorus modulation. Running the two outputs into two amplifiers opens up the stereo effect, which Vintage Guitar's reviewer described as producing more spacious sounds1.
What reviewers said
Lisa Sharken's November 2000 Vintage Guitar review of the Maxon Reissue Series, which also covered the OD808, FL301 and AD80, described the CS505's chorus in favorable terms:
"The chorus effect has the warmth you'd expect from an analog pedal and can be set for a variety of subtle or dramatic effects, like a rotating speaker."
She also found it somewhat reminiscent of the built-in chorus of a Roland JC120 amplifier1.
Discontinued, with a successor
The CS505 is no longer made. Godlyke describes the Maxon PAC-9 Pure Analog Chorus as being "Based on the now-defunct CS505 Stereo Chorus"2. Players looking at Maxon's other stereo chorus pedals in the current and recent range can also compare the Maxon CS-550, the Maxon CS-9 Pro Stereo Chorus, and the Maxon Ambient Stereo Chorus, or see the wider field on the Chorus Pedals page.
The CS505 is discontinued. The PAC-9 is the pedal Maxon describes as based on it.
