The Maxon OOD-9 Organic Overdrive is an overdrive pedal from Maxon, built in the company's 9-Series chassis and descended from Maxon's first overdrive, the OD880, which dates to around 1977. Maxon describes it as a low-gain, dynamic overdrive that responds like a tube amp, and notes that it works well as an amp booster.1
From the OD880 and OSD-9 to the OOD-9
The OOD-9 sits at the end of a short lineage. Maxon's first overdrive was the OD880, released around 1977 and described as an overdrive/soft distortion design.12 When Maxon revived that circuit, it did so first as the OSD-9 Overdrive/Soft Distortion, which Godlyke calls a reissue of the OD880.3
The OOD-9 takes that resurrected OSD-9 circuit and changes the central components: where the OSD-9 uses NOS 741 op amps, the OOD-9 uses current-production NJM (JRC) 4558 op amps, which Maxon describes as a move for modern tone.1 Guitar World's June 2008 review of the 9-Series pedals, written by Eric Kirkland, put the relationship plainly:
"The OSD-9 and OOD-9 utilize the same circuit but feature different central operating components."4
In practice that means the two pedals are siblings with different voicings. Maxon describes the OSD-9 as a warm, open-sounding overdrive with a mild high-end roll off,3 while the OOD-9 is presented as a lower-gain, dynamic overdrive in the manner of a tube amp, useful both as a boost into an amp and as a standalone low-gain drive.1
Controls, power and switching
The OOD-9 runs on regulated 9 VDC power, the same requirement Maxon lists for the OSD-9.13 Switching is mechanical true bypass, so the circuit drops out of the signal path when the pedal is off.1 The pedal is housed in what Maxon calls its indestructible, industry standard 9-Series chassis, the same enclosure family as the rest of the 9-Series line, including the TOD-9 True Tube Overdrive.1
The OOD-9 is listed as sold out on Godlyke's product page as of 26 October 2026.1 Godlyke Distributing was Maxon's North American distributor for many years, so players looking for a new unit may need to look at the used market or at related 9-Series overdrives such as the OD-9 or VOP-9 Vintage Overdrive Pro.
Price and availability
Godlyke's product page lists the OOD-9 at a regular price of £130.00 GBP, as stated on the page.1 The pedal is an overdrive rather than a distortion, so players comparing it with harder-edged 9-Series options may also want to look at the Over Drive Pro+ or the wider field of overdrive pedals.
