The Mesa/Boogie Boogie Five-Band Graphic EQ is a stand-alone graphic EQ pedal from Mesa/Boogie, announced on 17 March 2014. It puts the company's long-running amplifier EQ circuit, familiar from the front panels of Mesa's high-gain amps, into a single pedal that can sit on any board, alongside other equalization pedals.1
What it does
A graphic EQ lets a player cut or boost fixed frequency bands with slider controls, shaping the balance of bass, mids and treble without changing the character of the amp or the pedals in front of it. Mesa describes the Boogie Five-Band Graphic EQ as "packing the same tone shaping power and hand-built quality as those found in Mesa's high-end amplifiers", giving guitarists "this powerful tool in a stand alone pedal format".1
Where it came from
The pedal draws on a long lineage. Mesa/Boogie's on-board graphic EQ has been built into its amplifiers for well over four decades, and the company credits it as being "at the heart of chart topping guitar sounds", known among players for the "V-Curve" setting that scoops the mids and lifts the lows and highs. The Boogie Five-Band Graphic EQ carries that circuit out of the amp and onto the pedalboard.1
