The Mesa-Boogie Boogie EQ is a graphic equalization pedal from Mesa/Boogie. Its circuit is based on the 5-band graphic EQ from the company's Mark II amp, and it is designed to be used in front of your pedal chain or in an amp's FX loop1.
What it does
As a five-band graphic EQ, the pedal lets you cut or boost five fixed frequency bands to reshape your tone, in the same way the EQ section of the Mark II amp does. Beyond the five bands, the pedal comes with input and output controls for gain matching anywhere in your signal chain, so it can be placed at different points without upsetting the level between pedals or between the pedals and the amp1.
Mesa/Boogie's own framing of the pedal leans on its heritage: as Delicious Audio's Griffin Jennings put it in a 2023 buying guide, "Get the coveted late 70s/80s mid-scoop sound on your pedalboard!"1. That mid-scooped sound, associated with players who ran Mark-series amps with the EQ dipped in the mids, is what the pedal is pitched at delivering from a pedalboard.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Five EQ bands | Cut or boost five fixed frequency bands, as on the Mark II amp's graphic EQ1 |
| Input | Sets the level coming into the pedal for gain matching1 |
| Output | Sets the level leaving the pedal for gain matching1 |
Where it sits in a rig
The pedal is designed to be used in two places: in front of your pedal chain, or in an amp's FX loop1. The input and output controls make either placement workable, since the levels can be matched to whatever sits before and after it1.
Because the input and output controls let you match levels, the pedal can move around the signal chain without changing the level between pedals or between the pedals and the amp1.
