The Mosky BB Preamp is a mini preamp/overdrive pedal from Mosky, a maker of compact budget effects. Mosky's product page states plainly that the circuit is "Based on Xotic BB Preamp", the preamp/overdrive pedal that Xotic Effects has sold since 200212. What you get is the BB Preamp's basic recipe, a pre-gain stage that runs from clean boost into smooth overdrive, in a housing about half the size and with three knobs instead of the original's larger control set13.
As a preamp/overdrive, it sits in the same category as the pedal it copies: a low-to-medium gain box that shapes the front end of an amp rather than delivering heavy distortion on its own. Xotic describes the original's pre-gain stage as taking the pedal "from a very pristine clean to a very smooth, compressed, overdriven sound"4, and the Mosky version follows the same idea with its Gain knob.
What the Mosky BB Preamp does
Mosky classifies the pedal as a Preamp/Overdrive1. In practice that means it does two jobs: it can push the front of a clean amp into gentle breakup, or sit in front of an already-driven amp as a boost and tone shaper. The Xotic original it is based on works the same way, and Xotic's manual describes the BB Preamp as offering "a wide variety of sounds" through its pre-gain stage145.
The circuit lineage is worth knowing if you care about what is under the hood. Aion FX's technical analysis of the Xotic BB Preamp found it "very similar to the Ibanez Tube Screamer, but with an active Baxandall tone control added before the output buffer"2. In the Xotic, the original Tube Screamer tone stage is left in place with its tone knob effectively fixed, and the Baxandall treble and bass controls do the real tone shaping. The Mosky follows the BB Preamp design, so a player who knows the Tube Screamer family, including Mosky's own Mini Screamer Overdrive and Green Screamer, will find the BB Preamp a related but more flexible circuit, with independent bass and treble controls instead of a single tone knob.
The controls: Gain, Treble and Bass
The pedal has three knobs and an LED. Mosky's descriptions of each control are brief but cover the essentials1:
| Control | What it does (per Mosky) |
|---|---|
| Gain | Adjustes the amount of overdrive |
| Treble | Adjustes the middle-high frequency |
| Bass | Adjustes the low frequency |
The Treble and Bass pair is the Baxandall-style active tone stack the BB Preamp is known for, which lets you cut or boost each end of the spectrum independently2. That is the main practical difference between this pedal and a straight Tube Screamer copy: instead of one tone control rolling off highs, you get real control over the low end too, which matters if you play bass or like a thicker rhythm sound. Mosky also makes bass-oriented pedals in the same mini format, and the related Xotic Bass BB v1.5 Preamp is the bass-specific version of the original.
A mini pedal based on the Xotic BB Preamp
Mosky does not hide the pedigree: the product page states the circuit is based on the Xotic BB Preamp1. Xotic Effects, a California maker, first released the BB Preamp in 20022, and the pedal has since appeared in several versions, including the V1.5 and Custom Shop variants such as the MB and Comp models that Aion FX dates to 200936.
The size difference is the practical trade-off. The Mosky is a mini pedal1, built to take up less pedalboard space than the full-size Xotic BB Preamp. The cost of the mini format is control: the Xotic BB Preamp MB carries five controls, Gain, Mid Boost, Treble, Volume and Bass7, while the Mosky gives you three, with no separate volume knob or mid control.
A note on the DIY circuit history: Aion FX's tracing journal found that the widely circulated single-pot BB Preamp schematic originated in 2006 as a simplified work-alike posted by a forum user named KHE, and was not an exact clone of the Xotic circuit3. That schematic is separate from the Mosky product, but it explains why "BB Preamp clone" circuits vary in how faithfully they follow the original.
What reviewers said about the original
Reviewers have written about the Xotic original the Mosky unit is based on. Pedal of the Day's reviewer, testing the Xotic BB Preamp with a Bugera V55 amp, found it "gives a Pink Floyd-ish compression to the clean channel and creamy sustain on the crunch"8. MusicRadar, covering the bass version, described the pedal's purpose as adding "a musical, amp-like grit to their tone"9. Those verdicts describe the Xotic pedal, not the Mosky, but they indicate what players have historically gone to this circuit for: compression, sustain and amp-like grit rather than high-gain distortion.

Questions
Is the Mosky BB Preamp true bypass?
Yes. Mosky lists a true bypass switch on its product page, so when the pedal is switched off the signal passes through without active circuitry in the path. The Xotic BB Preamp it is based on also uses true bypass switching.
What power supply does the Mosky BB Preamp need?
Mosky specifies 9V DC with a negative center. That is the same standard supply used by most compact effects pedals, so a typical 9V pedalboard power supply works. Mosky does not list a current draw figure for the pedal.
Is the Mosky BB Preamp a clone of the Xotic BB Preamp?
Mosky's own product page says the pedal is based on the Xotic BB Preamp, a preamp/overdrive pedal first released by Xotic Effects in 2002. The Mosky version is a mini pedal with three controls instead of the Xotic's larger layout.
Is the Mosky BB Preamp fully analog?
Yes. Mosky describes the pedal as having a 100% analog signal path, meaning the audio is processed entirely by analog circuitry with no digital conversion.
How big is the Mosky BB Preamp?
Mosky lists the dimensions as 94mm long by 39mm wide by 32mm high, with a weight of 125g. That is roughly half the footprint of the Xotic BB Preamp, which measures 112mm by 60mm by 50mm and weighs 280g.
