The MXR I Love Dust Carbon Copy is a limited edition of the MXR Carbon Copy analog delay, announced in summer 2018 with artwork from the UK design collective ilovedust. MusicRadar described the standard pedal it is based on as "the world's bestselling analog delay," decked out for this run in ilovedust's "bold, brazen art."1

Functionally it is the same pedal as the regular Carbon Copy. gearnews.com put it plainly when the limited editions were introduced: "Functionally, the two limited editions are identical to their standard models. All that's different is the graphics."2

What it does

The Carbon Copy is an analog delay built on bucket brigade technology, which MXR uses for what MusicRadar called "authentic rich, warm analog delay." Repeats can carry optional modulation, and the pedal offers up to 600 ms of delay time. The top-panel controls are the usual three: Mix for the balance between dry signal and echoes, Delay for the repeat time, and Regen for the number of repeats.12

What sets the Carbon Copy apart from a simple three-knob delay is the modulation section. On this edition, two internal trim pots give user-adjustable width and rate control of the modulation, so the character of the wobble in the echoes is set inside the pedal rather than on the top panel.1

The limited edition

The I Love Dust edition exists as a limited edition of the Carbon Copy delay, decked out in the bold artwork of ilovedust, the award-winning UK design collective. MXR announced it alongside a limited edition Phase 90 phaser in the same finish treatment.2

As a limited run from 2018, this pedal is not a standard catalog item. Players after the same circuit in current production can look at the MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay, the Carbon Copy Deluxe, or the Carbon Copy Mini.

Questions

Is the I Love Dust Carbon Copy different from the standard Carbon Copy?

No. As gearnews.com reported when it was announced, the limited editions are functionally identical to their standard models, and all that is different is the graphics. You get the same analog delay circuit with up to 600 ms of delay time, optional modulation, Mix, Delay and Regen controls, and internal trim pots for the modulation's width and rate.

What does the modulation on the Carbon Copy do?

The Carbon Copy has optional modulation applied to its repeats. On the I Love Dust edition, the modulation's width and rate are set by two internal trim pots, so you can open the pedal up and adjust how pronounced and how fast the wobble in the echoes is, rather than working with a fixed setting.
