The Mythos Argonaut Octave Up is an analog octave-up pedal with no knobs at all: one footswitch, one circuit, and nothing to tweak. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described it as "a no-frills, no-knobs analog octave-up pedal" that "offers a clean-ish octave up sound."1 It sits in the wider family of octave and pitch pedals, but its approach is unusually simple.
What it does and how it works
The Argonaut generates its octave using a pair of handmatched NOS germanium diodes, which Mythos lists as the heart of the circuit.2 De Gregorio noted that this design produces "a consistent extra octave up and down the neck," and that "unlike traditional octave pedals the octave effect can be heard up and down the guitar neck."1 That is the main practical difference from the classic octave-up designs: the effect does not collapse as you move away from the lower frets.
Because there are no controls, the pedal is either on or off. What a player changes is what feeds it and what follows it1.
Where it sits on a board
De Gregorio's placement advice is specific: "We like the Argonaut after a fuzz pedal but before an overdrive."1 So in a chain running from guitar to amp, it would come after a fuzz and before an overdrive.
Used on its own, he found it delivers "a gnarly, ring mod-esque sound that is pretty funky."1 Fed by fuzz instead, it becomes part of the heavier octave-fuzz sound that pedals of this type are known for.
