The Mythos Pedals Extra Hot is a dual overdrive and boost pedal that puts two different drive circuits in one housing. Mythos describes it as the spiritual successor to the Hot Chicken pedal the company made a number of years ago, but with two different circuits than the original unit1. It was launched in August 2024 as an exclusive for Carter Vintage Guitars2.
The two sides are labeled like a takeout menu. The "Take Out" side is a simple single-transistor, hard-clipped overdrive that Mythos says can run from a boost, to a low gain drive, to an almost fuzz-like dirt pedal1. The "Dine In" side is an ODR-1 style overdrive, a circuit MusicRadar describes as "one of the quintessential sounds of Nashville"2.
Two overdrive circuits in one pedal
The Take Out side is an updated version of the drive from Mythos's own Air Lane Drive and 210 Double Drive pedals1. Under the hood it is a hard-clipping, single-transistor circuit, and despite its simplicity MusicRadar notes it can yield a lot of sounds, from boost to drive to the quasi-fuzz tones that hard-clipping circuits can produce2.
The Dine In side takes a different approach with an ODR-1 style overdrive. On the original Extra Hot, this side features Cut (Tone) and Size (Bass) controls that let you shape the voice to fit any setup1.
There is no order switch. Unlike some two-in-one drives, the Take Out circuit always comes first and feeds into the Dine In circuit2.
Controls and footswitches
Each side has its own footswitch, so the two circuits can be used independently or stacked2. The controls use hot-sauce naming throughout, with chickenhead knobs on top2.
| Side | Control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Take Out | Flavor | Gain control12 |
| Take Out | Sauce | Volume control1 |
| Dine In | Cut | Tone control1 |
| Dine In | Size | Bass control1 |
MusicRadar highlighted the Flavor knob in particular, describing "a fire engine red knob for 'Flavor' on the Take Out side of the pedal that is of course a gain control"2.
The Extra Spicy version
Mythos also makes an "Extra Spicy" version of the Extra Hot. Sonically it has been updated with a more versatile Size (Bass) control, but the rest of the pedal is the same as the standard Extra Hot3. The enclosure gets a hot-sauce bottle treatment, dressing the pedal up in black, yellow and orange3.
The Extra Spicy version is exclusive to mythospedals.com and drops in occasional batches, so it is not a standard catalog item3.
Where it came from
The Extra Hot traces back to the Hot Chicken, an exclusive pedal that Mythos founder Zach Broyles, a former employee at Carter Vintage Guitars, made for the Nashville shop. When Seymour Duncan launched a Hot Chicken pickup set, Broyles took the opportunity to revise the circuit and update the recipe, resulting in the Extra Hot2.
On the build itself, MusicRadar's verdict was positive:
"As with all things Mythos, this is a beautifully put together pedal"2
Where to find one
The Extra Hot is built with its jacks mounted on the top of the enclosure2. Reviewers have found it to be a beautifully put together pedal, and despite its simple drive control it can yield a lot of sounds, from boost to drive to quasi-fuzz tones2.

Questions
What is the difference between the Mythos Extra Hot and the Hot Chicken?
The Extra Hot is the spiritual successor to the Hot Chicken that Mythos made for Carter Vintage Guitars a number of years ago. The updated Extra Hot has two different circuits than the original unit, so it is a revision rather than a straight reissue of the earlier pedal.
Where can you buy the Mythos Extra Hot?
The original Extra Hot was released in August 2024 and was available exclusively through Carter Vintage Guitars, so it could be hard to find. The Extra Spicy version is exclusive to mythospedals.com and drops in occasional batches.
Can the two sides of the Extra Hot be used separately?
Yes. Each side has its own footswitch, so the Take Out and Dine In circuits can be engaged independently or stacked. There is no order switch, though: the Take Out circuit always comes first and feeds into the Dine In circuit.
Who designed the Mythos Extra Hot?
Zach Broyles, the founder of Mythos Pedals and a former employee at Carter Vintage Guitars, designed the Extra Hot. He also made the original Hot Chicken exclusive for Carter Vintage Guitars.
What is the Extra Hot based on?
The Take Out side is an updated version of the drive from the Mythos Air Lane Drive and 210 Double Drive pedals, a single-transistor hard-clipped circuit. The Dine In side is an ODR-1 style overdrive, a sound MusicRadar associates with Nashville.
