The Mythos SusMaryOsep! V2 is a three-in-one pedal that puts a treble boost, an overdrive and an echo in a single enclosure, with three separate footswitches so you can engage each effect independently1. It is the updated version of guitarist R.J. Ronquillo's signature pedal with Mythos Pedals, originally debuted in 2019 and given what Guitar World called "a comprehensive internal and external face-lift for 2022"1. It launched at $3291.
The name comes from Filipino slang: a common word that, as Delicious Audio put it, "mothers yell at their children", short for "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!"2. The pedal is available now1.
Treble boost, overdrive and echo in one pedal
Each of the three circuits has its own footswitch, so the Echo, Treble Boost and Overdrive sections can be used alone or stacked14. That stacking is the point of the design: the original idea, which R.J. Ronquillo brought to Mythos, was to put his favorite Mythos overdrive together with a slap echo in one box4.
Treble Boost. The boost section is Mythos' take on the classic germanium treble booster design, reworked with a silicon transistor for consistency. Guitar World describes it as "a silicon transistor-loaded reinvention of the classic germanium design", and the change is said to give "a more aggressive and tighter feel"1. A 3-way voicing switch lets you aim the boost at bass, mid or treble frequencies, and two internal trimmers adjust the gain range and bias of the boost2. On the original pedal, the boost delivered a tight, punchy clean boost with a slight boost at minimum and approximately 20dB at max4.
Overdrive. The drive section uses the circuit of Mythos' improved Herculean V2 overdrive pedal1. Mythos says it relies "completely on the op amp for clipping", which they credit for "an incredible amount of headroom and amp like response"3.
Echo. The echo is a vintage-voiced, PT2399-based slapback echo with approximately 450ms of delay time2. Mythos describes it as "a musical and fun to play delay that has a vintage voice that wants to run away on you but never does"3.
The controls
The V2's biggest control change is on its face: where the V1 used master sliders for the Echo and Boost sides of the pedal, the V2 swaps these out for master knobs1. The echo's Time and Feedback controls also moved. On the original pedal these were side-accessible internal trimpots4; on the V2 they are front-mounted knobs, with a Mix knob and "two small dots to indicate R.J.'s preferred slap setting"23.
| Control | Section | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Three footswitches | All | Engage the Echo, Treble Boost and Overdrive independently1 |
| Master knobs | Echo and Boost | Replace the V1's master sliders1 |
| 3-way voicing switch | Treble Boost | Sets the boost to bass, mid or treble focused2 |
| Two internal trimmers | Treble Boost | Change the gain range and bias of the boost2 |
| Mix knob | Echo | Adjusts the echo mix3 |
| Time and Feedback knobs | Echo | Front-mounted on the V2; two dots mark R.J.'s preferred slap setting3 |
The pedal is built with top mount jacks, true bypass switching refined for less popping, and what Mythos calls "top quality jacks, switches, pots, and components throughout"23.
The SusMaryOsep! V2 has no internal battery clip. It runs on a standard 9V DC power adapter, center negative only, like all Mythos Pedals2.
History: R.J. Ronquillo's signature pedal and the V2 changes
The SusMaryOsep! grew out of a collaboration between Nashville's Mythos Pedals and R.J. Ronquillo, a guitarist known for his pedal demo videos. In early 2019, R.J. and Zach of Mythos "began tossing ideas around to create a unique drive/echo pedal", which evolved into the SusMaryOsep23. Ronquillo first approached the builder with the idea of having his favorite Mythos overdrive, the Herculean V2, paired with a slap echo in one box4. The original debuted in 20191.
The V2 arrived in 2022 with changes inside and out12:
- Master knobs replace the V1's master sliders for the Echo and Boost sides1
- The overdrive section uses the circuit of Mythos' improved Herculean V21
- The treble boost is reworked with a silicon transistor in place of the classic germanium design12
- The echo's Time and Feedback controls move from internal trimpots to front-mounted knobs23
The SusMaryOsep! V2 is an updated version of R.J. Ronquillo's signature effects pedal, a treble boost/drive/echo 3-in-11. The collaboration behind it began in early 2019, when R.J. and Zach started tossing ideas around to create a unique drive/echo pedal, which evolved into the SusMaryOsep23. Ronquillo first approached the builder about the idea of having his favorite Mythos overdrive in a single unit4. Questions
What does SusMaryOsep mean?
It is a common Filipino slang word, short for "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!", the kind of thing mothers yell at their children. Mythos and R.J. Ronquillo, who is of Filipino heritage, chose it as the name of their collaborative signature pedal, which originally debuted in 2019.
How long is the delay on the SusMaryOsep?
The echo section is built on a PT2399 chip and offers approximately 450ms of delay time. Mythos describes it as a vintage-voiced slapback echo, and the V2 moves the Time and Feedback controls to the face of the pedal, with two small dots marking R.J.'s preferred slap setting.
Does the Mythos SusMaryOsep take a battery?
No. Mythos Pedals do not have internal 9 volt battery clips. The SusMaryOsep! V2 runs on a standard 9 volt DC power adapter, center negative only, so you will need a power supply rather than a battery.
Is the SusMaryOsep overdrive a Herculean?
Yes, effectively. The overdrive section is Mythos' Herculean V2 circuit, adjusted for a more open voice and relying completely on the op amp for clipping. Mythos says this gives it a large amount of headroom and an amp-like response.
