The Old-Fx Custom Pedals Klone Boost Overdrive is a hand-built Klon-style boost overdrive pedal from Old-Fx Custom Pedals, a builder based in Brazil. It follows the circuit of the original Klon Centaur, the overdrive that spawned a whole family of copies known as Klones, and it is built to order rather than made in batches. Pedal of the Day reviewed it in December 2019 and found it a faithful take on the original design1.

What it is and what it does

Like other Klones, this is a transparent-style overdrive and boost in one box: the circuit is the same as the original Klon, according to Pedal of the Day's reviewer, and the control layout is the same as the original as well1. That means the familiar three-knob arrangement players of the Centaur know, rather than the extra switches and secondary controls some other Klones add. The Kenny B Pedals Klone, for comparison, keeps the usual Output, Treble and Gain controls but adds a Bass toggle switch for use with a bass rig3.

The reviewer's verdict was positive on authenticity as well as tone:

"for a truly authentic and inspiring piece of gear to add to your rig"

The same review described it as a "white wonder", a nod to the silver-and-gold look the original Klon made famous, and pointed readers to the demo to hear how it sounds on its own1.

How it is built

This is a small-shop pedal. Pedal of the Day notes that each one is built by hand, one by one, as it is ordered1. For a player, that means the pedal is made when you order it rather than pulled from warehouse stock, and it puts the Old-Fx in the same camp as other boutique hand-built Klones such as the RYRA The Klone, which Guitar World's buying guide also describes as hand-built4.

Colors and enclosure

The enclosure follows the Klon look, and the pedal is available in several different color schemes to fit the aesthetic of any pedalboard, according to Pedal of the Day1.

Where it sits among the Klones

The Klon Centaur has been out of production for years, and a large number of builders make their own versions of the circuit. Guitar World's guide to the best Klon clones covers the field, including the hand-built RYRA The Klone4. Pedal of the Day has reviewed many of them, including the Kenny B Pedals Klone Boost Overdrive3, the 68 Pedals Klone and the Pedal Monsters Klone. The Old-Fx version stands out for being built to order by hand and for sticking exactly to the original's circuit and layout1.

The Old-Fx Klone has also been featured a number of times in Pedal of the Day's Klone Wars Series on YouTube, a series in which different Klones are put head to head1. If you are comparing Klones, it is one of the series to look at, alongside the site's individual reviews and our own pages on boost pedals and overdrive pedals.
