The One Control BJFE in Your Hand Series Dyna Red Distortion 4K is a handmade distortion pedal built around the sound of a cranked UK-style amplifier. One Control describes it as "a masterwork of handmade distortion", part of "an exquisite line of handmade pedals", delivering "bold, balanced distortion, adaptable for any amp configuration, solid-state or tube-driven"1. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio calls it a "full-on Plexi pedal", with an organic distortion he describes as "reminiscent of the early to mid-70s UK voiced amplifiers, cranked up to 10, with the tubes worn down just a little, and maybe a little 'browning' of the sound with a Variac"2.
The controls: Volume, Drive, Treble and Presence
The 4K carries four knobs, each with a distinct job. One Control's product page describes them as follows1:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| V (Volume) | Adjusts overall output level, ideal for balancing the pedal with your amp |
| D (Drive) | Controls distortion intensity and sustain, ranging from subtle to powerful compression for a richly textured tone |
| T (Treble) | Adjusts high frequencies, perfect for fine-tuning tonal brightness |
| P (Presence) | Fine-tunes the higher frequency range even beyond Treble, enabling detailed control over the final sound's clarity and definition |
The Drive knob gets a fuller description on the same page: "From light gain to full, clear sustain, the DRIVE knob offers a spectrum of distortion intensity and sustain, responding with touch sensitivity at lower settings and compression-rich stability at higher ones"1.
The Presence knob is the pedal's distinguishing control. De Gregorio writes that "the Presence knob helps dial in the perfect amount of highs for any amp situation", and notes the 4K features "an extra Presence knob that tames some of the hard mid-range"2. One Control describes the pedal overall as "featuring a lush texture and balanced, aggressive tone that sets it apart"1.
From Barefoot to One Control: the 4K version
The Dyna Red circuit did not start with One Control. The 4K is "an upgrade to the previous Barefoot version of this full-on Plexi pedal", according to De Gregorio2. That earlier pedal, the BearFoot FX Dyna Red Distortion, was a three-knob design: RockBoard's PedalPedia describes its Tone, Volume and Distortion controls, saying "Bearfoot FX has squeezed the tones from a full Marshall stack into its Dyna Red Distortion pedal", going "from crunchy, light overdrive as you dial back the distortion to dynamic, roaring distortion when you crank it up"4.
The 4K version adds the Presence knob on top of that layout. As gearnews.com put it when the pedal was announced: "The name 4K comes from the Presence control, that combines with Volume, Drive and Treble controls"3.
The 4K is a four-knob redesign of the earlier three-knob BearFoot FX Dyna Red Distortion. The two are separate pedals from separate makers, and the Presence control is the 4K's addition.
Availability and reception
The pedal was reported as now shipping in December 20242, and De Gregorio added it to Delicious Audio's list of the Best Plexi Pedals, in a buying guide that also covers other Marshall-inspired drives25. One Control's own product page listed it as sold out as of 26 October 20261.
The designer, Bjorn Juhl, is described by One Control as "a pioneer of boutique pedal design", and the BJFE in Your Hand series is "the only line approved by Björn Jühl himself"1. De Gregorio points to "designer Bjorn Juhl's demo of the pedal at NAMM 2020" for a look at what it does2.
