The Cali76 FET Compressor is a studio-grade compressor pedal from Origin Effects, inspired by the Urei 1176 studio compressor. It is the latest in a long lineage of Cali76 compressors, the pedal family Origin Effects says put the company on the map back in 2012, and it packs a full set of studio-style controls into a compact, brushed stainless enclosure designed for the pedalboard1.
Origin Effects describes the pedal as a single compressor with all the controls you would expect on a full-featured studio unit: input, output, attack, release and ratio can all be individually adjusted, and a DRY level control blends compressed and uncompressed signal for parallel compression2. The maker says it serves up "distinctive, ultra-fast FET compression tones with the perfect balance of character and clarity" through an all-analog signal path1. In use, Origin Effects positions it at the front of the signal chain for evening out dynamics, adding sustain or emphasising pick attack, and also for keeping overall level consistent when switching between sounds2.
An 1176-style FET compressor in a pedal
The circuit is Origin Effects' interpretation of the UREI 1176, the classic studio FET compressor. FET stands for field-effect transistor, the gain-control element the 1176 used in place of the optocell or VCA found in other compressor designs; it is known for an incredibly fast-acting dynamic response. Origin Effects says both the Cali76 FET Compressor and the Cali76 Stacked Compressor are FET-based compressors based on the UREI 1176, which gives them that fast response and a similar sonic character2.
The original Cali76 came from company founder Simon Keats' repair work. In a MusicRadar interview he explained the origin of the idea3:
"I'd come across the [UREI] 1176 [LN Peak Limiter]. When I was repairing them, I thought it would be great to have"3
The Cali76 FET Compressor is the current single-stage version of that circuit. It differs from the Cali76 Stacked Compressor, a dual-stage pedal that puts one 1176-style compressor feeding into a second in series; the FET Compressor is one compressor with the full studio control set2.
The controls
Premier Guitar's review lists the control set as dry, out, in, ratio, attack and release, with the usual mono in and out jacks4.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| In | Increases the incoming signal and the amount of compression4 |
| Out | Sets the output level4 |
| Ratio | Dedicated ratio control, part of the full studio-style set12 |
| Attack | Changes from slow to fast moving clockwise; slow is percussive and bright, fast grabs transients early for a smooth attack4 |
| Release | Dedicated release control12 |
| Dry | Blends the guitar's compressed and unprocessed signal for parallel compression4 |
The DRY control is the pedal's route to parallel compression, a studio technique where the compressed signal is mixed with the untouched original so you keep transient detail while gaining sustain and consistency. Origin Effects says the DRY control lets you do this on your pedalboard without any extra gear1, and Guitar.com's buying guide notes that "the inclusion of a dedicated Dry knob allows for seamless parallel compression"5.
Power: 9V in, 24V inside
The pedal runs from a 9V DC 2.1 mm center-negative supply and draws 200 mA1. Internally, the voltage is stepped up to 24V where the circuit needs it2. That internal rail is the point of the design: Origin Effects says the new compressors offer headroom even higher than running their predecessors at 18V6, and Gearnews reported the same change as an increase in internal voltage from 9V to 24V for better headroom7.
There is no battery option. The Cali76 FET Compressor is powered by a mains adaptor only, which is not included, and Origin Effects has dropped the usual 9V battery compartment1. With a 200 mA draw, budget for it on a powered pedalboard rather than a low-current daisy chain.
History and versions
The Cali76 FET Compressor was released in 2024, announced in April alongside the Cali76 Bass Compressor8. Both are the latest incarnation of the Cali76 compressor platform and replaced the Cali76 Compact Deluxe and Cali76 Compact Bass in the Origin Effects range86. The new pedals are 17% smaller than their predecessors, with a footprint of 64 x 124 mm (2.5 x 4.8 in.)6, housed in a compact, brushed stainless enclosure1.
The Cali76 FET Compressor is the latest in a long lineage of Cali76 compressors, the line that put Origin Effects on the map back in 201221. A black finish version of the pedal, listed by RockBoard's PedalPedia as a compressor booster, also exists, with its own manual on the maker's site9.
What reviewers said
The Cali76 FET is widely considered the ultimate boutique compressor, though its premium appointments don't come cheap5. Guitar Pedal X described it as a brand new compact take with a floating system of metering, and noted that the Cali76 has long been many a player's favorite compressor, still counting for fairly considerable numbers of sales10.
The wider Cali76 family has drawn praise for years. Ovnilab's review of the original Cali76 noted it was based on the legendary Urei 1176 FET compressor, and Guitar Interactive Magazine reported in 2015 that Cali76 pedals had "been hailed as the best compressor pedals that money can buy and embraced by guitarists, bass players and producers the world over"1112.
Cali76 FET Compressor vs the alternatives
| Model | What it is | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Cali76 FET Compressor | Single 1176-style FET compressor with full studio controls and dry blend2 | The current standard Cali76 for guitar |
| Cali76 Bass Compressor | Same 1176-inspired platform tuned for bass-specific frequency response13 | Handles low-end frequencies more effectively; for bass players |
| Cali76 Stacked Compressor | Dual-stage compressor, two 1176-style compressors in series2 | Two compression stages in one pedal, same 9V-to-24V power supply |
| Cali76 Compact Deluxe (discontinued) | The predecessor, discrete FET compression with high headroom6 | Replaced by the FET Compressor in 2024 |

Questions
What is the difference between the Cali76 FET Compressor and the Cali76 Compact Deluxe?
The Cali76 FET Compressor replaced the Cali76 Compact Deluxe in Origin Effects' range in 2024. It is the latest evolution of the same Cali76 compressor circuit, but the new pedal is 17% smaller than its predecessor and runs its internal voltage at 24V, which Origin Effects says gives even more headroom than running the older pedal at 18V.
Does the Cali76 FET Compressor work on bass?
It is a guitar compressor, but Origin Effects released a dedicated Cali76 Bass Compressor alongside it in 2024. The Bass version uses the same 1176-inspired FET circuit, tuned for bass-specific frequency response so it handles low-end frequencies more effectively. Bass players looking at the Cali76 platform are the audience the Bass Compressor was built for.
Can the Cali76 FET Compressor run on a battery?
No. Origin Effects powers the Cali76 FET Compressor by a mains adaptor only, which is not included, and the usual 9V battery option has been dropped. It needs a 9V DC 2.1 mm center-negative supply drawing 200 mA, so it should be planned around a pedalboard power source rather than a battery.
Is the Cali76 FET Compressor true bypass?
No, it uses a high-quality buffered bypass rather than true bypass. Origin Effects lists buffered bypass for the Cali76 FET Compressor, the Cali76 Bass Compressor and the Cali76 Stacked Compressor. Players who specifically want true bypass would need to look at other compressors.
How do you set up parallel compression on the Cali76?
Use the DRY control. It blends your uncompressed signal back in with the compressed signal, so you keep pick attack and dynamics while the compressed path adds sustain and consistency. Origin Effects designed the DRY control so you can achieve parallel compression on your pedalboard without any extra gear.
