The 1176 is a FET-based studio limiter introduced in 1967 and designed by Universal Audio founder Bill Putnam. It was the first solid-state peak limiter on the market, and its FET circuitry gave it a distinctive "enhanced" sound, particularly in the all-buttons-in mode players call "British Mode"12. Universal Audio describes it as the same FET compressor used on decades of legendary studio guitar sounds3. Fifty years on it remains one of the most copied compressor circuits in the pedal world, with makers from Universal Audio itself to Origin Effects, Warm Audio, Wampler and DryBell building 1176-style compressor pedals for guitar and bass.

Where the 1176 came from: Bill Putnam's FET peak limiter

The 1176 Peak Limiter arrived in 1967 as a studio mainstay, and Wampler describes it as "the first solid-state peak limiter on the market," with FET-based circuitry that endowed it with a distinctive "enhanced" sound, particularly in the all-buttons-in "British Mode"12. Its designer was Bill Putnam, the founder of Universal Audio, and Universal Audio still frames the circuit as coming "from the mind of UA founder Bill Putnam"3.

DryBell calls the UREI 1176 "one of the most powerful studio workhorses over the last 50 years"8, and Warm Audio says the 76-style of compression was "used heavily on vocals, drums, guitar, bass, and anything in the studio requiring tight dynamics"7. That studio pedigree is why the circuit keeps surfacing on pedalboards: players who grew up on records compressed through an 1176 want that behavior underfoot.

How a FET compressor works

A FET compressor uses a field-effect transistor as a voltage-controlled resistor in the signal path. When the input level rises, the control circuit pushes the FET toward its pinch-off region, reducing gain; when the level falls, the FET opens back up. Because a FET reacts almost instantly, the 1176 family is known for its speed. Origin Effects describes its Cali76 FET Compressor and Cali76 Stacked Compressor as "FET-based compressors based on the UREI 1176, meaning they both have an incredibly fast-acting dynamic response"9.

That speed is what separates the 1176 from the other classic studio compressor of the same era, the Teletronix LA-2A. Universal Audio describes the LA-2A as "this legendary optical tube limiter" that "gives you softer, warmer dynamics control versus the 1176"3. An optical limiter reads the signal with a light-dependent resistor, which is inherently slower and smoother; a FET design grabs transients faster and can be driven into color.

Warm Audio sums up the 76-style character as "known for its versatility, speed, and rich harmonic distortion when driving the FETs & transformers"7. That last part matters for guitarists: the 1176 does not just level a signal, it can add harmonic content when pushed, which is why pedal makers keep the topology rather than substituting a cleaner voltage-controlled amplifier design.

The controls: input, output, ratio, attack and release

The 1176's control scheme is unusual by pedal standards. There is no threshold knob. Instead, the Input control sets how hard the circuit is driven, and the Ratio control sets how hard it pulls back. Warm Audio's Pedal76, an all-analog transformer-balanced FET compressor pedal, carries "Attack & Release, Ratio, and Input controls" in keeping with the original layout101.

ControlWhat it does
InputDrives the circuit harder; more input means more gain reduction
OutputSets the level leaving the pedal
RatioSets how much the output changes for a given input change
AttackSets how quickly gain reduction engages
ReleaseSets how quickly gain reduction lets go

Origin Effects' Cali76 line follows the same philosophy. In a 2016 interview, Simon Keats explained that "the ratio switch provides 4:1 and 20:1 settings"11, the gentle-compression and limiting ends of the original's range. The all-buttons-in "British Mode" mentioned by Wampler2 is the famous trick of engaging every ratio button at once for an aggressive, distorted squash that players have used on drums, bass and guitars for decades.

The 1176 sound on guitar and bass

On guitar and bass, the 1176 sound is about fast, colorful dynamics control. Gearphoria's Blake Wright, reviewing the Cali76 Compact Deluxe, wrote71213:

"The beauty of an 1176-inspired circuit is that you can really give it what for and it barely flinches."14

Joshua Grange, playing with Lera Lynn, said of the Cali76-TX:

"It sounds exactly like an 1176 rack compressor but in pedal form!"15

Bass players get specific benefits from the topology. Caveman Audio builds the compressor section of its BAS1 Bass Channel as "our version of the legendary Urei 1176LN, but with increased attack time in order to preserve the dynamics" of the bass16. Origin Effects' Cali76 FET Compressor can also be placed further down the signal chain, after drives or in an amp's effects loop, for control over overall dynamics9.

The circuit has a documented history with players pushing it hard. Origin Effects notes that Lowell George "famously used two 1176s at once," a dual-compressor signal path that became part of the Cali76-TX's design1715. Robin Mullarkey, interviewed by Origin Effects, said:

"I love having an 1176 in a pedal to give me a selection of classic sounds."18

1176-style compressor pedals and modeled versions

The 1176 now lives on pedalboards in several forms: all-analog recreations, inspired circuits, digital emulations, and DIY builds192021.

A few notes on the range:

  • Universal Audio's pedal is the emulation route, aimed at players who want the studio unit's behavior modeled rather than rebuilt in analog21.
  • Origin Effects' Cali76 FET Compressor uses "uncompromising all-analogue circuitry"22, and the Cali76 Bass Compressor brings the same 1176-inspired circuitry to bass23.
  • Darkglass and Walrus Audio treat the 1176 as one flavor among several: the Hyper Luminal's FET mode is "inspired by the legendary 1176"25, and the DFX-1's FET compression "emulates the classic 1176 FET compressor with fast attack and release"26.
  • For builders, PedalPCB's General Tso's Compressor is a DIY compressor circuit board28.

Power requirements vary widely across 1176-style pedals, so check each pedal's own specification before buying a power supply. Origin Effects' Cali76 FET Compressor, for example, runs on 9V DC from a 2.1 mm center-negative connector2229.

Whether a player chooses an analog recreation, an emulation, or a pedal that simply borrows the FET flavor, the appeal is the same thing studios have valued since 1967: a fast, colorful limiter that holds a performance together and rewards being pushed30131.

Questions

Is the 1176 a FET compressor?

Yes. The 1176 Peak Limiter was the first solid-state peak limiter on the market, and its gain reduction is controlled by FET-based circuitry. Pedals described as 1176-style or 76-style are FET compressors, and makers like Origin Effects build their Cali76 range as all-analogue FET designs based on the UREI 1176.

Why doesn't the 1176 have a threshold knob?

The 1176 design predates the threshold-and-ratio scheme most compressor pedals use. Instead of a threshold, the Input control sets how hard you drive the circuit, and the Ratio control sets how much gain reduction follows. Pushing the input harder engages more compression at whatever ratio is selected.

What is the difference between the 1176 and the LA-2A?

The 1176 is a FET compressor known for speed and rich harmonic color when driven, while the Teletronix LA-2A is an optical tube limiter. Universal Audio describes the LA-2A as giving softer, warmer dynamics control versus the 1176. In practice the 1176 grabs transients faster and the LA-2A behaves more gently.

Is the UREI 1176 the same as the Universal Audio 1176?

They are the same family of designs. The UREI 1176 studio compressor is the original rack unit, and Universal Audio, the company founded by the 1176's designer Bill Putnam, continues the line today with rack units and an 1176 Studio Compressor Pedal for pedalboards.

Can you use an 1176 compressor on guitar?

Yes. The 76-style FET compressor sound was used heavily on vocals, drums, guitar and bass in the studio, and several makers now offer 1176-inspired compressor pedals for guitar and bass, including Universal Audio, Origin Effects, Warm Audio, Wampler and DryBell.

Was the 1176 released in 1967 or 1968?

Wampler dates the 1176 Peak Limiter's introduction to 1967, calling it a studio mainstay since then. That is the only release date given by the sources on this page.
