The Origin Effects Cali76-TX-L is a large-format compressor pedal that recreates the 1176 FET compressor circuit, the design behind the legendary Urei 1176 studio limiter, and adds a high-end Lundahl output transformer on the output12. Origin Effects describes that transformer as offering ultra-linear performance, transparent low end and a flat phase response, and the company points the TX-L at studio and bass guitar players for exactly those reasons12. Gearnews' Jef put it plainly after the reissue was announced: "Sounds like it's the better choice for bass work or studios"2.

The 1176 connection

The Cali76 range takes its name and its circuit approach from the Urei 1176, the FET compressor that Ovnilab's review calls "the legendary Urei 1176 FET compressor" as the basis for the Cali765. When the TX and TX-L reissues arrived, gearnews.com described them as pedals that "emulate, no less, the fabled 1176 FET compressor circuit"2. If you want to see how the smaller versions of the same idea compare, the Cali76-TX is the sibling without the Lundahl transformer, and the Cali76 Compact Deluxe carries the design into a smaller enclosure.

The Lundahl transformer

The transformer is what separates the TX-L from the standard TX. Origin Effects' own press release describes "the Cali76-TX-L features a high-end Lundahl transformer, offering the ultra-linear performance, transparent low end and" flat phase response6. Premier Guitar's announcement of the reissue repeats the same specification and adds that the transformer version is "preferred for studio and bass guitar use"1. In practical terms, a transformer output of this kind is about keeping the low end intact and the phase response flat, which matters most on bass and in recording situations where the compressed signal is treated as a studio-grade source.

The TX-L also carries a High/Low gain switch for transformer saturation, giving a way to push the output stage harder for a more colored sound1.

Controls

The big box Cali76 pedals follow the 1176 layout closely. As gearnews.com noted of the reissues: "Yes, you get Ratio, Attack, Release, Output and Input/Comp controls. But the Dry control is missing"2.

ControlWhat it does
RatioSets compression amount, 1176 style
AttackSets how quickly the compressor responds
ReleaseSets how quickly it lets go
OutputSets overall output level
Input/CompSets how hard the circuit is driven
High/Low gain switchSwitches gain for transformer saturation1

The Dry control found on some other Cali76 versions is not present on the big box TX-L2. If parallel compression blending is essential to your setup, look at the compact variants instead.

Limited edition history

The large-format Cali76 pedals were originally retired by the company, and the reissue came as a limited run. Origin Effects announced in November 2016: "We have now built a limited run of Cali76-TX and TX-L compressors which will also be finished in this unique Limited Edi"tion finish7. The 2019 reissue returned the TX and TX-L as limited editions available through selected dealers on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 December 2019, at $749 or £6501.

Origin Effects artist Ian Allison owns a related variant, the TX-LP, and described it in a 2021 interview: "I was lucky enough to grab a big box Cali76 TX-LP serial number 16!" and "It has the Lundahl transformer along with dry blend and boost"8. The LP adds the dry blend and boost that the standard TX-L leaves out.

Power and build

The Cali76 design runs on 18V power, higher than the 9V most pedals take, as documented in an Origin Effects reader pedalboard feature describing a Cali76 unit at 18V9. That rules out many standard daisy chains and battery options, so plan a supply that delivers 18V. Build quality is part of the pitch: gearnews.com describes the reissues as "made in England to a very high standard with quality components"29. A reader rig rundown on the Origin Effects site lists the Cali76 TX-L simply as a compressor in a player's chain4.

Questions

What is the Lundahl transformer in the Cali76-TX-L for?

The TX-L carries a high-end Lundahl output transformer. According to Origin Effects, it gives the pedal ultra-linear performance, a transparent low end and a flat phase response, which is why the company points studio and bass guitar players toward this version over the standard Cali76-TX.

Does the Cali76-TX-L have a Dry control?

No. The big box Cali76-TX-L gives you Ratio, Attack, Release, Output and Input/Comp controls, but the Dry control found on some other Cali76 versions is missing on this one. The related TX-LP variant Ian Allison owns does include dry blend, along with a boost.

Is the Cali76-TX-L a limited edition?

Yes. The Cali76-TX and TX-L pedals are limited edition reissues of the original large-format Cali76, sold through selected dealers on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 December 2019, with the run finished in Origin Effects Maroon.

What compressor is the Cali76 based on?

The Cali76 range is based on the Urei 1176 FET compressor. Gearnews describes the limited edition pedals as emulating the fabled 1176 FET compressor circuit, and the independent review site Ovnilab calls the Cali76 a pedal based on the legendary Urei 1176.

Where is the Cali76-TX-L made?

The Cali76-TX-L is made in England. Gearnews notes it is built to a very high standard with quality components, and Origin Effects pedals generally carry Made in the UK build.

What voltage does the Cali76 use?

The Cali76 runs on 18V power, as documented in an Origin Effects reader pedalboard feature describing a Cali76 unit at 18V. That is higher than the standard 9V many pedals take, so it matters when planning power supplies.
