LineageSecond in the Humongous Lineup, spiritual successor to the retired HM-Too Many Clones1

The Pepers Pedals Humongous Distortion is an analog pedal that combines a distortion, a booster and an equalizer in one box. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as the second pedal in the Humongous Lineup, and says of its range: "You can get the traditional chainsaw tone with this or dial in a number of other nasty flavours."1

Place in the Humongous lineup

Pepers Pedals positions the Humongous Distortion as the second release in its Humongous Lineup. It is also the spiritual successor to the company's now retired HM-Too Many Clones, so players who knew that pedal will find its ideas carried forward here.1

Controls and how it works

The front panel carries five knobs: Level, Distortion, High, Mid and Low. Level sets output volume, Distortion sets the amount of gain, and the three tone controls shape the EQ.1

On top of that, the Humongous knob selects between three tone stacks: "Selectable HEAVY, HYPER and THRASH." Each stack changes how the tone controls behave, giving three distinct voicings of the same circuit.1

There is also a clean blend control, which the maker introduces with "There is an added clean blend control with internal bleed trimmer because BLEND!!" Mixing clean signal back in under heavy distortion is a common way to keep pick attack and low end intact.1

Inside the pedal there are additional switchable bands set by dip switches, each linked to one of the tone controls. Opening the pedal up changes which bands the tone knobs act on, so it is worth knowing these are there before you commit to a front-panel setting.1

Questions

Is the Pepers Humongous Distortion analog?

Yes. The maker lists the circuit type as analog. It is described as a distortion, booster and equalizer in one box, so the whole signal path, including the tone stacks and the clean blend, runs on analog circuitry rather than digital modeling.

What do the HEAVY, HYPER and THRASH settings do?

They are three selectable tone stacks on the Humongous knob. Each one changes how the Low, Mid and High controls shape the distortion, so you can move between different flavors of high-gain voice without touching the individual EQ knobs.

What does the Blend control do?

Blend is a clean blend control that mixes some of your unaffected guitar signal back in with the distortion. There is also an internal bleed trimmer that adjusts that blend further, which helps keep pick attack and low end present under heavy gain.

What does the footswitch on the Humongous Distortion do?

The Mode Footswitch toggles between Distortion or No Distortion. In other words it switches the pedal between the distorted voice and the undistorted signal, acting as the pedal's on and off control for the gain stage.

What pedal did the Humongous Distortion replace?

The maker describes the Humongous Distortion as the spiritual successor to the now retired Pepers' HM-Too Many Clones. The older pedal is no longer made, so the Humongous Distortion is where that circuit's ideas live on.

What are the dip switches inside for?

Inside the pedal there are additional switchable bands, set with dip switches, and each one is linked to one of the tone controls. That lets you change which frequency bands the Low, Mid and High knobs act on, tailoring the EQ beyond the front-panel settings.
