The Revv G2 V2 Canadian Edition is an analog overdrive pedal from Revv, the Canadian maker best known for its Generator tube amp heads. Revv describes it as an organic amp-in-a-box pedal based on the Green channel of the Generator 120 amp, delivering tube-like crunch tones with what the maker calls great dynamics and clarity1. It carries the same V2 circuit revision as the standard Revv G2 V2, in a Canadian Edition finish, and Revv says the V2 revision carefully tweaked the bloom, sustain and sag of notes for a true classic character1.

The G2 sits at the lower gain end of Revv's pedal range. Where the G4 V2 is described by Revv as a liquid sustaining high gain pedal based on the Red channel of the same amp line, the G2 distills the Green channel's touch-sensitive, lower gain sounds12.

What the G2 V2 does

Revv positions the G2 as a touch-sensitive drive rather than a high gain distortion. The maker says the pedal delivers true analog sag and harmonic bloom, and that it was developed alongside Nashville's premier session guitarists to achieve a wide variety of touch-sensitive sounds13. In Performer Mag's review of the original G2, Chris Devine found that character held up in practice:

"There's an element of underlying clarity as well, where it's not over-coloring anything"4

Chris Devine, Performer Mag4

That review also noted the G2 is flexible about where it sits in a rig: it can be run in an amp's effects loop into the power amp section, or into a DAW with an amp sim and impulse response4. Pedal of the Day's review of the G2 described it as based on the Green Channel from Revv's Generator amps, with touch-sensitive breakup in its Blue mode5.

Drive switch and EQ

The control layout is Volume, Gain and a 3-band EQ with Bass, Middle and Treble knobs56, plus the 3-position Drive switch that Revv says provides different voicing and gain saturation1.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets output level6
GainSets the amount of drive5
Bass, Middle, Treble3-band EQ for dialing in tone5
Drive switch (3-position)Selects voicing and gain saturation1

The three switch positions work like this:

  • Off: pulls the clipping diodes out of the signal path, turning the pedal into a high-headroom clean boost with active EQ3. Pedal of the Day described the Off position as a full-range boost5.
  • Blue: adds touch-sensitive, edge-of-breakup crunch3. Pedal of the Day called the Blue position "a touch-sensitive tone with gorgeous musical breakup"5.
  • Red: brings thicker, hot-rodded classic-stack saturation3.

Guitar World described the same 3-position Drive mode on the G2 line as a switch between clean tone-shaping, touch-sensitive overdrive and classic tube amp tones7. In Guitar Pedal X's review of the original G2, Stefan Karlsson noted the middle position is essentially a significantly cleaner version of the Blue setting8.

Circuit origin and the V2 Canadian Edition

The G2's circuit traces back to Revv's Generator 120 amp. Guitar Pedal X described the original G2 as the No. 2 Green Crunch Channel of the Revv Generator 120, completing the maker's Generator pedal lineup8, and Performer Mag noted Revv had already distilled the amp's Red Channel into the G4 pedal before finding a way to capture the lower gain sounds4. Gearnews reported at the original launch that the Canadian company Revv was above all known for its Generator tube heads9.

The lineage since then:

  • The original Revv G2 launched as the Green Channel drive581.
  • The Revv G2 Gold, a limited edition released in 2020, used the same circuitry as the original G2, including its 3-position Drive mode7.
  • The G2 V2 introduced the current circuit revision, which Revv says tweaked the bloom, sustain and sag of notes1.
  • The G2 V2 Canadian Edition packages that V2 circuit in a Canadian Edition finish1.

The V2 treatment runs across Revv's drive pedal range: the G4 V2 page describes its own V2 circuit revision as adding versatility in lower gain ranges and a more clear, cutting midrange1011, and Revv's later Anniversary G3 and G4 editions retained the V2 circuit and the familiar control layout, according to Guitar Pedal X11.

The G2 V2 runs on a 9V center negative external supply only, at 14mA minimum3, so there is no battery option and it needs a pedalboard power supply rather than a daisy chain shared with high current digital pedals.

Questions

Is the Revv G2 V2 Canadian Edition true bypass?

Yes. Revv lists the pedal as analog with true bypass switching, so with the pedal disengaged your signal passes through without buffering or tone loss. The standard G2 V2 page describes the same true bypass, zero signal loss design.

What amp is the Revv G2 V2 based on?

It is an amp-in-a-box pedal based on the Green channel of Revv's Generator 120 amp, the same channel the original G2 was distilled from. Revv says the G2 was developed alongside Nashville session guitarists to capture that channel's touch-sensitive lower gain character.

How much current does the Revv G2 V2 draw?

Revv specifies 9V DC power at 14mA. The standard G2 V2 page notes a 9V center negative external supply only, at 14mA minimum, so it runs easily from most pedalboard power supplies but not from a battery.

Is the Revv G2 V2 Canadian Edition analog?

Yes. Revv describes it as an analog, true bypass overdrive. The V2 circuit revision tweaks the bloom, sustain and sag of notes for what the maker calls a true classic character.

What does the 3-position drive switch do on the Revv G2 V2?

It changes the clipping and voicing. Off pulls the clipping diodes out of the path for a high headroom clean boost with active EQ. Blue adds touch-sensitive, edge-of-breakup crunch. Red brings thicker, hot-rodded classic-stack saturation.
