The Revv G2 is an analog overdrive pedal from Revv, the Canadian amplifier maker whose Generation series amps are the foundation of its pedal line. Where the G4 pedal distilled the Red Channel of those amps into a high-gain box, the G2 takes the lower-gain side of the same amps: Performer Magazine's Chris Devine described it as Revv finding "a way to distill the lower gain" sounds of the Generation series into pedal form1. Revv itself calls the current G2 V2 a medium-gain "amp-in-a-box" engineered to retain your guitar's natural acoustic characteristics2.

The pedal launched in June 2019 at $229134, and Guitar Pedal X still listed it at $229 in its 2025 boost and overdrive roundup3. It is manufactured in Canada with a 2 year limited warranty upon registration2.

What the G2 does

The G2 sits on the cleaner end of Revv's pedal range. Gearnews described it as a touch-sensitive drive pedal covering ground "from boost to crunch," built around the Green Channel character of Revv's amps5. Revv positions it as more than a traditional overdrive: a medium-gain amp-in-a-box that preserves the natural character of the guitar2.

It is flexible about where it lives in a rig. Pedal of the Day found it "plays nicely with combo amps, heads, other pedals, in effects loops and with cab modeling"6. Performer Magazine went further on the preamp side, noting it "can be put in the effects loop of an amp and using the power amp section, as well as running into a DAW with an amp sim/IR"1. Guitar World's coverage of the Gold edition also highlighted its low-noise design, which the publication said makes it ideal for stacking with other pedals7.

On gain character, Devine wrote in Performer Magazine:

"The gain is plentiful for leads, especially for players who like to hear a lot of pick dynamics and overtones"1

Controls and the Red and Blue drive modes

The control set is Volume, Gain, a three-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) and a three-position Drive voicing toggle2. Guitar Pedal X's 2025 listing confirms the layout: Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume, Drive Mode and Gain3.

The voicing toggle is where the pedal's range lives. Revv's own description of the V2:

  • Off (center): pulls the clipping diodes out of the path for a high-headroom clean boost and active EQ2. Pedal of the Day found that in this position "the G2 works as a full-range boost"6.
  • Blue: adds touch-sensitive edge-of-breakup crunch2. Pedal of the Day called it "a touch-sensitive tone with gorgeous musical breakup"6, and Guitar Pedal X placed it "in Blues Breaker and Blues Driver style territory," noting it is the default setting with the switch up4.
  • Red: brings thicker, hot-rodded classic-stack saturation2. Guitar Pedal X said the "Red down mode gets you more into raunchier Plexi style territory"4.

The three-band EQ earned its own mention in Guitar World's coverage, which described it as offering "extensive sound-shaping possibilities"7.

How it compares with the G3 and G4

The G2 is the low-gain entry in Revv's G-series. The G4 pedal came first, based on the Red Channel of the Generation amps1, and the G3 covers the higher-gain middle ground. Revv's G3 V2 page describes its 3-position Aggression toggle as physically altering the pedal's internal compression, saturation and low-end response, "giving three distinct amplifier channels in a single enclosure"8. The G2's toggle works differently: rather than three amp channels, it moves between clean boost, breakup and saturated voicings2.

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reviewed the whole V2 G-Series line in 2025 and was clear about where the G2 landed for him3:

"For sure the best of the V2 G-Series Editions."3

He found it had plenty of gain and volume, really high headroom if required, and was "pretty perfect for BluesBreaker / JTM45 / Plexi tones overall"3.

Versions and editions

The G2 has appeared in several forms since 2019:

VersionWhat it is
G2 (2019)Original release, $229, available June 20199
G2 Gold (2020)Limited edition of 200 pedals worldwide, same circuitry as the original, gold finish, $2297
G2 V2Current circuit revision, tweaking the bloom, sustain and sag of notes10
G2 V2 Canadian EditionV2 circuit in a Canadian-themed finish, 9V DC power, 14mA, true bypass10
Anniversary edition (2025)Sold direct from Revv at a discount, £149 plus delivery, amounting to £16511

The V2 circuit revision, as Revv describes it on the Canadian Edition page, "carefully tweaked the bloom, sustain, & sag of notes for a true classic character"10. Revv also says the G2 was developed alongside Nashville's premier session guitarists to achieve a wide variety of touch-sensitive sounds10.

The G2 V2 runs on a 9V center negative external supply only, at 14mA minimum2. There is no battery option, so it needs a pedalboard power supply, though its low current draw is easy on most power bricks.

A player's use

Sam "Bam" Koltun, whose artist page appears on Revv's site, uses the G2 as a push pedal in the band Dorothy, with Level around 8 or 9 and Gain around 1. In his words12:

"having a third option to push the clean tone, or the semi dirty tone, or the super dirty has been very helpful"12

He received the pedal from Hoogie at a festival show while on tour with Dorothy12.

Questions

What is the difference between the Revv G2 and G3?

The G2 is the lower-gain pedal of the pair. Revv describes it as a medium-gain amp-in-a-box that keeps your guitar's natural acoustic character, while the G3 is the higher-gain pedal with a 3-position Aggression toggle that alters internal compression, saturation and low-end response for three distinct amplifier channels in one enclosure. Both share the three-position voicing switch concept.

Does the Revv G2 work as a preamp into a power amp?

Yes, in the ways reviewers have documented. Performer Magazine notes it can be placed in an amp's effects loop to drive the power amp section, and it can also run into a DAW with an amp sim or impulse response. Pedal of the Day adds that it plays nicely with combo amps, heads, other pedals, effects loops and cab modeling.

What do the red and blue modes do on the Revv G2?

The three-position toggle has an Off, Blue and Red setting. Off pulls the clipping diodes out of the path for a high-headroom clean boost with active EQ. Blue adds touch-sensitive edge-of-breakup crunch, and Red brings thicker, hot-rodded classic-stack saturation. Guitar Pedal X likened Blue to Blues Breaker and Blues Driver territory and Red to raunchier Plexi style.

How much does the Revv G2 cost?

The G2 launched at $229 in 2019 and Guitar Pedal X still listed it at $229 in its 2025 roundup. A limited Gold edition in 2020 also retailed at $229. An Anniversary edition sold direct from Revv in 2025 at a discount, £149 plus delivery, amounting to about £165.

Is the Revv G2 V2 true bypass?

Yes. Revv's product page for the G2 V2 specifies true bypass with zero signal loss, and the Canadian Edition page lists it as analog with true bypass switching.

How much current does the Revv G2 V2 draw?

Revv lists the G2 V2 at 14mA minimum on a 9V center negative external supply only. There is no battery option, so it needs a power supply, but its low draw makes it easy to run on most pedalboard power bricks alongside other pedals.
