The Revv G2 is an overdrive pedal from Revv Amplification, the Canadian amp maker whose Generator series heads carry color-named channels. The G2 takes the Green Channel of the Generator 120 amp and puts it in a stompbox: Revv describes it as an organic "amp-in-a-box" pedal based on the G120 Green channel1, and more specifically as a medium-gain "amp-in-a-box" engineered to retain your guitar's natural acoustic characteristics2. Guitar World covered it at launch as Revv Amplification's new G2 overdrive pedal3.

Where the related Revv G4 distills the high-gain Red Channel of the Generator amps, the G2 carries the lower-gain Green Channel sound. Pedal of the Day found the pedal behaves the way the amp channel does456:

"The 'Green Channel' on the amps is crunchy and touch-sensitive, and that's exactly how the G2 behaves as well."4

Guitar Pedal X placed the G2 in Revv's "Generator pedal trifecta" alongside the G3 and G4, calling it the No. 2 Green Crunch Channel of the Generator 120 and noting it is billed as a Drive rather than a Distortion7.

The controls

The G2's front panel follows the shape of an amp channel rather than a traditional overdrive. Revv's current G2 V2 lists the controls as Volume, Gain, a 3-band EQ and a 3-position Drive voicing toggle2. Guitar Pedal X's rundown names them individually: Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume, Drive Mode (Blue for more saturation, Off, Red for most saturation) and Gain8.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the output level
GainSets the amount of drive
Bass, Middle, Treble3-band EQ for dialing in the tone4
Drive Mode toggleThree-position voicing and saturation switch1

Pedal of the Day described the EQ section as Bass, Middle and Treble knobs for dialing in tone, sitting alongside the typical Volume and Gain controls4.

The three-position mode switch

The toggle is what turns the G2 from one pedal into three. Revv describes it as a 3-position Drive switch for different voicing and gain saturation1, and the maker spells out what each position does on the G2 V22:

  • Off: pulls the clipping diodes out of the path for a high-headroom clean boost with active EQ2
  • Blue: adds touch-sensitive, edge-of-breakup crunch2
  • Red: brings thicker, hot-rodded classic-stack saturation2

Pedal of the Day heard the same three characters in the original G2. In the Off position the pedal works as a full-range boost; in Blue it gives a touch-sensitive tone with what the reviewer called gorgeous musical breakup; and Red rounds things out with a classic, fat, amp-like gain sound4. Guitar World summarized the switch as letting players move between clean tone-shaping, touch-sensitive overdrive and classic tube amp tones9.

Connections and amp setups

The current G2 V2 uses top mounted 1/4" input and output jacks, with 2x 1/4" audio connections2. Pedal of the Day found the pedal fits a wide range of rigs:

"The G2 Overdrive also plays nicely with combo amps, heads, other pedals, in effects loops and with cab modeling, too."4

That flexibility matters for an amp-in-a-box design: it can sit in front of a clean combo as the source of crunch, or in an effects loop or a cab-modeling setup where it acts as the preamp stage. Performer Mag's Chris Devine reviewed the G2 in the context of the G4, noting that where the G4 is based on the Red Channel of the Generation series amps, Revv found a way to distill the lower gain sounds into the G25.

The G2 as a boost

Two of the three toggle positions make the G2 usable as a boost. With the switch in Off, the clipping diodes leave the signal path and the pedal becomes a high-headroom clean boost with active EQ2, which Pedal of the Day characterizes as a full-range boost4. Performer Mag's reviewer took a simpler route, answering the boost question directly:

The G2 can also serve as a boost, with reviewers noting that running it at low gain and high output level pushes an amp harder without adding much distortion of its own.5

Where the G2 came from

Revv Amplification launched the original G2 overdrive in 2019, as reported by Guitar World at the time3. The pedal joined the G3 and G4 in Revv's Generator pedal line, each one carrying a channel from the Generator 120 amp into a box: the G2 the Green Crunch Channel, the G4 the Red Channel7. In 2020 Revv released a limited-edition G2 Gold, which Guitar World described as carrying the same 3-position Drive mode for switching between clean tone-shaping, touch-sensitive overdrive and classic tube amp tones9. The current version is the G2 V2, also offered as the G2 V2 Canadian Edition1.
