The Rocket Surgeon StarLifter is a bass preamp and DI pedal: it sits at the front of your bass pedalboard, shapes your tone with an onboard EQ, and feeds the mixing desk or an interface through a balanced DI output. It was introduced in April 2019 at a $349 street price1, and it still carried that same $349 street price in Premier Guitar's 2023 review2. It is made in the USA by Nordstrand Audio, released under Carey Nordstrand's Rocket Surgeon Effect Pedal Laboratory imprint, his series of bass and guitar effects that takes his pickup business further down the signal chain23.

Nordstrand pitches it as a straightforward tool rather than a feature-heavy multi-effect: "top notch sound quality with a simple accessible feature set with clear and easy to use controls"4. The box itself is blue and heavy, at 2 1/2 pounds, and Premier Guitar's reviewer found that "the extra mass instills confidence that Rocket Surgeon's latest is a rugged pedal," while noting the weight could make hauling a pedalboard more cumbersome2.

The controls: 3-band EQ, sweepable mids, contour switch

The core of the StarLifter is a 3-band EQ whose mid control is coupled to a mid frequency sweep, so you choose both how much midrange to boost or cut and where in the frequency range it happens43. That sweepable mid is what lets you pull a bass forward in a mix or carve out a hole for it around a guitar, depending on where the band is fighting you.

On top of the EQ sits a 3-way contour switch that sets the pedal's overall voicing before you touch the EQ knobs2:

Contour positionVoicing
ModernScooped, with bass and treble boost
VintagePunchy, mid-friendly
DisabledColorless, flat

The output section adds the working-gig features. There is a tuner out that stays on when the mute switch is engaged, so you can tune silently on stage3, and a switchable input impedance for flexibility with different basses1. The line out, in Nordstrand's words, "provides plenty of gain to make any amp or powered cabinet sweat"5, while the DI jack is meant for a mic preamp or recording interface5.

Power: AC adaptor, no battery

The StarLifter is not designed for battery power2. It runs on an included 12 to 15V AC adaptor2, connecting through a power input jack that Nordstrand specifies for the included 15VAC 300mA supply5.

The StarLifter needs AC power rather than a battery or a standard daisy chain, so plan for its own adaptor or an isolated supply with an AC output.

Nordstrand sells the supply separately in two versions for players who lose one or want a spare: a US adaptor with an input of 120VAC, 60Hz, 60mA and an output of 15VAC, 300mA6, and a European adaptor with an input of 230VAC, 50Hz, 200mA and the same 15VAC, 300mA output7.

What reviewers said

Published reviewers have been positive across the board. Premier Guitar's 2023 review focused on the pedal's transparency: with the EQ flat, the reviewer found no significant difference in tone compared with going straight into the amp's input, and wrote that "In my experience, few preamps at this price achieve this level of transparency"2. The same review put the DI to work on Nashville's Lower Broadway, where the sound engineers at both clubs were impressed with its full, clean presentation that needed little adjustment at the desk2.

Guitar World's review noted that "The Starlifter makes a formidable first impression, thanks to its considerable size and weight," reading the heft as a sturdy, pedal-format build3. And in Bass Musician Magazine's August 2026 roundup of bass preamps and DI pedals it had reviewed, the verdict was direct:

"Our conclusion: if you're shopping for a pedal preamp, the StarLifter needs to be on your shortlist."
Bass Musician Magazine8

The one recurring caveat is the weight: at 2 1/2 pounds, Premier Guitar's reviewer found it could make schlepping a pedalboard more cumbersome2.

Where it came from

The StarLifter is a bass preamp/DI pedal from Rocket Surgeon, offered at a $349 street price1. Its rear panel gives a player a tuner out with a mute switch, a line out and a DI out, along with a switchable input impedance for flexibility with different basses4. Reviewers have described it as offering top notch sound quality with a simple, accessible feature set and clear, easy to use controls4.

Questions

Does the Rocket Surgeon StarLifter run on a battery?

No. The StarLifter is not designed for battery power. It runs on an included 12 to 15V AC adaptor, and Nordstrand sells the 15VAC 300mA supply in US and European versions as a spare or replacement. A standard 9V DC pedalboard supply will not power it.

What does the contour switch do on the StarLifter?

It is a 3-way switch that sets the pedal's overall voicing. The modern position is scooped, with a bass and treble boost; the vintage position is punchy and mid-friendly; and the third position is disabled, giving a colorless, flat signal path.

Does the StarLifter have a tuner out?

Yes. The output section includes a tuner out that stays active when the mute switch is engaged, so you can tune silently on stage while the main outputs are muted.

Is the Rocket Surgeon StarLifter made by Nordstrand?

It is made by Nordstrand Audio, released under Carey Nordstrand's Rocket Surgeon Effect Pedal Laboratory imprint, and it is built in the USA. Rocket Surgeon is Nordstrand's series of bass and guitar effects that extends his pickup business down the signal chain.

What power supply does the StarLifter use?

It takes a 12 to 15VAC supply at a 15VAC 300mA power input jack, and the adaptor is included with the pedal. Nordstrand sells replacement supplies in US and European versions, both with a 15VAC 300mA output.

Can the StarLifter be used as a DI box?

Yes. It has a dedicated DI jack for connecting a mic preamp or recording interface, plus a line out with enough gain to drive an amp or powered cabinet, and a tuner out with a mute switch.
