Rocktron's HUSH Noise Reduction is a noise reduction pedal for guitar players. Rocktron describes it plainly: "Got noise? Get the world's foremost noise reduction for guitar players, Rocktron's HUSH®." According to the maker, when used properly it will wipe out hiss, unwanted feedback and pickup buzz, and it has been what Rocktron calls the standard in most touring rigs worldwide since 19841.

What it does

Rocktron says the HUSH pedal delivers 65dB of signal cleanup while your music signal integrity remains unaffected1. The pedal incorporates what the maker calls the latest version of the HUSH discreet circuitry1.

How it differs from a noise gate

HUSH is not a gate in the usual sense. Rocktron describes HUSH the Pedal as a form of single-ended noise reduction that tracks your signal all the way and pushes the noise floor below audibility, unlike noise gates1. In practice, that means the pedal follows your playing continuously rather than simply muting the signal when you stop.

Using it

Placement and setting are simple, according to Rocktron: plug the HUSH in after distortion boxes, wah-wahs, noisy vintage effects or other noisy units, then turn the Threshold knob until the noise goes away. The Threshold control is used to smooth out the signal while wiping out noise1.

Where it came from

Rocktron's HUSH noise reduction has been, in the maker's words, "easily the standard in most touring rigs worldwide since 1984"1. The circuit itself has a further lineage: the HUSH noise reduction system was designed by the Rocktron engineering team that went on to found ISP's Decimator design2.

The design has a place in noise reduction history beyond Rocktron. Premier Guitar, reviewing an ISP Technologies pedal, noted that ISP's Decimator came "From the original Rocktron engineering team that designed the Hush noise reduction"2. For readers comparing options, the ISP Technologies ISP Decimator II and the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor are among the alternatives in the same field, and the wider category is covered on Noise Gate Pedals.
