The Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Mini is a boost pedal and line driver from Seymour Duncan, a compact version of the company's long-running Pickup Booster. Seymour Duncan describes it as a "Hi-Def Boost & Line Driver" that delivers "the exact same boosting and tone-shaping power" of the full-size pedal in a pedalboard space-saving enclosure1. Inside, it carries what the maker calls a studio-grade Class A circuit with a discrete push-pull design and true-bypass switching1.
The design goal, as Seymour Duncan puts it, is a boost that leaves the instrument alone: "The Pickup Booster Mini is your guitar's sound, but better," a boost that keeps the guitar's personality intact rather than coloring it1. The full-size Pickup Booster it descends from is designed to provide 25dB of crystal-clean Class A boost, according to Aion FX's technical analysis of the circuit2.
What it does for your sound
The Mini covers two jobs. As a boost, its Gain control sets the amount of clean push, up to driving the front end of your amp for grit and maximum saturation when the knob is around 12 o'clock or higher1. As a line driver, Seymour Duncan says that even at zero gain it will clean up your signal chain and make tone-degrading long cable runs behave1.
The pedal's Clean, Buffered Boost setting gives a transparent boost with greater signal headroom and no loss of high end, and can also be used at the end of the chain to drive long cable runs1.
The controls and settings
The Mini keeps the control set of the full-size pedal: a Gain control that sets the boost amount and a Resonance switch that interacts directly with the pickups1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Sets the boost amount; around 12 o'clock it starts driving the amp's front end for grit, and wide open gives maximum saturation1 |
| Resonance switch | Interacts directly with the pickups; lets single coils emulate a humbucker sound or a high-output tone1 |
Seymour Duncan publishes several named settings for the pedal1:
- Clean, Buffered Boost: a transparent boost with greater headroom and no high-end loss, or a line driver at the end of the chain.
- Fattened Strat: Resonance switch on "1" shifts a single coil's resonant peak down, thickening the tone.
- Fattened Humbucker: Resonance switch on "0" with Gain all the way up gives a humbucker maximum saturation and sustain.
- Maximum Beef: Resonance switch on "2" with Gain all the way up gives a single coil the fatness of a high-output humbucker with a meaty, saturated tone.
On the Resonance switch, position 1 adds what Seymour Duncan calls "teeth" when used with humbuckers, and position 2 gives a hint of a "cocked-wah" filter sound1. Aion FX's analysis of the full-size circuit describes the same feature as a resonant peak switch that makes a single-coil pickup sound more like a vintage or high-output humbucker depending on the setting2.
How the Mini differs from the full-size Pickup Booster
The full-size Pickup Booster is the Mini's direct ancestor. Seymour Duncan says the Mini carries the same boosting and tone-shaping power in a smaller size, and the full-size model's product page now directs buyers to the Mini3.
The full-size pedal uses a discrete push-pull output stage for increased drive capability and is described by the maker as a true-bypass pedal with a Class A, low-noise circuit design3. Guitar World reported on the pedal's release in 2014, when Seymour Duncan brought out a version with added features including the Resonance Switch and unity gain4.
The Pickup Booster lineage
The Pickup Booster dates back to 2004, when Seymour Duncan first released it as a clean boost pedal5. Aion FX, which traced the circuit in 2019, notes one quirk of that original version: there was always some amount of signal boost even at the lowest setting5.
The pedal was resurrected in 2015 as version 2, with an improved Class A push-pull output stage and a Boost control rearranged so the pedal could go all the way down to unity gain5. Aion FX traced a V2 unit manufactured in 2018, noting that the new version uses uncommon and specific resistor values such as 30.1k and 4.77k, and that its SMD board had to be destroyed to trace it5. The trace also found a mistake in the PCB layout of versions from 2015 onward: a 4.7uF capacitor is not actually connected to the ground plane as it should be5. Aion FX used the trace as the basis for its Photon Booster / Line Driver DIY project2.
The Mini is the current chapter of that lineage: the same circuit idea, in the smaller enclosure, at $99.001.

Questions
Is the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Mini true bypass?
Yes. Seymour Duncan describes the Pickup Booster Mini as having true-bypass switching, so with the pedal off your signal passes through without the circuit in the way. The same true-bypass design is listed for the full-size Pickup Booster.
What does the Resonance switch do?
The Resonance switch makes the pedal interact directly with your pickups. Position 1 shifts a single coil's resonant peak down to thicken the tone, while position 2 pushes a single coil toward the fatness of a high-output humbucker, with a hint of a cocked-wah filter sound.
How is the Mini different from the full-size Pickup Booster?
Seymour Duncan says the Mini delivers the exact same boosting and tone-shaping power as the full-size Pickup Booster, in a smaller, pedalboard space-saving enclosure.
Can the Pickup Booster Mini drive long cable runs?
Yes. Seymour Duncan says that even at zero gain the Mini acts as a line driver, cleaning up the signal chain and driving long cable runs. Its Clean, Buffered Boost setting is also intended for use at the end of a chain to drive long cables with greater headroom.
Does it work with single coils and humbuckers?
Yes. The Resonance switch is designed to work with both. With single coils it can emulate a humbucker sound or a high-output tone, and with humbuckers position 1 adds what Seymour Duncan calls teeth, while position 0 with the Gain wide open gives maximum saturation and sustain.
