The Shin-Ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz is a Japanese silicon transistor fuzz from the late 1960s and early 1970s, an early 1970s silicon transistor fuzz in Aion FX's description12. Made in Japan by Shin-ei, it was sold as the Fuzz Box FY-2 and, like many Japanese effects of the era, under various brand names3. Two things define it for players: a scooped midrange character that gives it a hollow, raw voice, and a volume drop so severe that Aion FX calls the original unit's output "excessively low volume"1.

What it does and how it works

The FY-2 is a two-stage transistor fuzz with volume and fuzz controls51. Its fuzz control is unusual: rather than directly setting gain, it shifts the balance between the two transistor stages, so turning it changes the harmonics and texture of the fuzz rather than simply its intensity1. The result, combined with the circuit's tone shaping, is the scooped midrange character the pedal is known for1.

The trade-off is level. The original unit suffers from excessively low volume1, a volume drop characteristic of vintage units that Fredric Effects also cites when describing its own FY-2 clone6. Anyone using an original on a board needs to make up that level elsewhere.

The transistors are part of the story for builders. The Guitar FX Layouts blog notes that a 2SC536F works in its layout but has a different pinout, requiring a leg to be twisted to fit7.

History, origin and reproductions

The FY-2 came out of the Japanese effects industry of the late 60s and early 70s, the era Guitar.com's Richard Purvis describes when reviewing a Shin-ei-inspired pedal, "the raw and raspy Japanese-made Shin-ei fuzz pedals of the late 60s and early 70s"8. TONEHOME dates the Fuzz Box FY-2 to 1977 and notes it was available under different brand names like Avora, Companion, Jax, Kimbara and Thomas3; Aion FX places it in the early 1970s1. MusicRadar likewise notes the circuit was available under various brand names9.

The original is long discontinued and remains a hot item on the vintage market, as Premier Guitar put it in a review of a modern clone4. That scarcity has produced a family of descendants:

  • Shin-ei's own reproduction: a new reproduction of the original vintage 1960s FY-2, in solid steel construction with original style paint on black units, and original vintage style labels including the Official Companion Foil Emblem and battery snap label1011. It comes in Woodstock White, Sea Foam Fuzz and Metallic Green, with Metallic Green at a $20 upcharge10.
  • Fredric Effects Unpleasant Companion: a clone that addresses the volume drop characteristic of vintage units6.
  • Union Tube & Transistor's take: inspired by the rare and highly sought-after FY-2 circuit from the late 1960s5.
  • DIY layouts: the Guitar FX Layouts vero layout adds an output boost mod, a mid scoop control and series polarity protection to fix the stock pedal's shortcomings7.

The FY-2's reach extends further. Guitar World's Paul Riario notes the EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life Pedal was "inspired by the Shin-Ei FY2 Companion and FY6 Super Fuzz boxes"122, and Premier Guitar describes JHS's Legends of Fuzz Crimson in a wedge-shaped enclosure that clearly nods at the FY-213. The FY-2 sits alongside its sibling, the Shin-ei FY-6 Super Fuzz, in the Shin-ei fuzz lineage.

The EQD Terminal Fuzz connection

A commenter on the Guitar FX Layouts post suggested a direct link to the EarthQuaker Devices Terminal fuzz: "So if you add a 'Treble' knop, this could basically be the EQD Terminal fuzz?"7. That is an informal comparison from a blog commenter rather than a confirmed circuit analysis, so treat it as a player's observation, not a documented relationship.

Questions

What is the Shin-ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz?

A Japanese-made silicon transistor fuzz box from the late 1960s and early 1970s, sold by Shin-ei under the Companion brand and also under names like Avora, Jax, Kimbara and Thomas. It is known for a scooped midrange, a fuzz control that shifts the balance between two transistor stages, and a large volume drop compared with a clean signal.

Why does the Shin-ei Companion have a scooped midrange?

The circuit's tone shaping leaves the mids cut back, giving the hollow, raw character players associate with it. DIY layouts add a scoop control as a variable resistor from a 100n capacitor to ground, and one builder reported the mid scoop knob works excellently. The scoop is part of the design rather than a defect.

Is the Shin-ei FY-2 still made?

The original is long discontinued and remains a hot item on the vintage market. Shin-ei itself now sells a new reproduction of the 1960s FY-2 Fuzz Box, built in solid steel with original style labels including the Companion foil emblem, in several colors.

What colors does the Shin-ei Companion FY-2 reproduction come in?

Shin-ei lists the reproduction in Woodstock White, Sea Foam Fuzz and Metallic Green, with Metallic Green carrying a $20 upcharge. Black units get the original style paint.

How does the FY-2 relate to the EQD Terminal Fuzz?

A commenter on the Guitar FX Layouts blog suggested that adding a treble knob to the FY-2 circuit could basically make it the EarthQuaker Devices Terminal fuzz. That is an informal comparison from a blog commenter, not a confirmed circuit link.
