The Solar Chug Lite is a high-gain distortion pedal from Solar, the guitar and effects brand founded by Ola Englund. It is the streamlined, compact, user-friendly sibling of the original Chug preamp pedal Solar released in 2022, keeping the same core circuit underpinnings while cutting the control count down to six1. Guitar World's reviewer called it "a must-have for any metal guitarist looking to chug, with a rugged build and more gain than should be legal"1.
Where the original Chug was a highly adjustable preamp designed to plug directly into a power amp, the Chug Lite has been tweaked to work into the front end of your amp, which is how most players actually run distortion pedals12.
Controls and the sweepable mid
The Chug Lite has six controls: Bass, Middle, Treble, Output, Frequency and Gain1. Guitar Pedal X describes the mid section as semi-parametric, because the Mid Frequency control lets you choose which midrange frequencies the Middle control acts on3.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gain | Sets the amount of distortion |
| Bass | Cuts or boosts low end |
| Middle | Cuts or boosts midrange at the Frequency setting |
| Frequency | Selects the mid frequency, between 160Hz and 2.6kHz1 |
| Treble | Cuts or boosts high end |
| Output | Sets the overall level |
The Frequency dial works with the Middle control to cut or boost frequencies between 160Hz and 2.6kHz1. That range spans the low mids where mud builds up through the upper mids where a guitar cuts through a mix, so a player can scoop out boxiness or push presence without touching the Bass or Treble knobs.
How it differs from the original Chug
The original Chug, released in 2022, was a highly adjustable preamp with dual concentric pots offering what Guitar World called "a treasure trove of tone-shaping options"12. It was designed to shine when plugged directly into a power amp, in the style of preamp pedals1. The Chug Lite keeps the same core circuit underpinnings but simplifies the interface and moves the intended use to the front end of an amp13.
Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson compared the two directly and came down on the Lite's side34:
"The Mini Chug Lite is a revelation - I get better tones with that than the original - its lower cost, smaller, leaner - and yet more full fat!"4
He also found the Lite easier to dial in, getting "a really punchy sound with minimal effort" with most dials near 3 o'clock and Mid Frequency at 9 o'clock, and noted that the original 10-control pedal is actually more "on-rails" than the Lite34. In his 2025 compact high-gain roundup, the Chug Lite "knocks its larger sibling off the board, and out of this selection"5.
Build and power
The Chug Lite is housed in an all-metal enclosure that Solar promises is "built like a tank"1. It runs on 9V DC at 25mA, a modest draw that leaves headroom on a typical pedalboard supply1. True bypass means the signal passes untouched when the pedal is off1.
What reviewers said
Guitar World's review praised the pedal's active EQ, high levels of gain and sweepable mid frequency, concluding it is "a must-have for any metal guitarist looking to chug, with a rugged build and more gain than should be legal"1. In Guitar World's best distortion pedals buying guide, it was "priced at a reasonable $129" and judged to "perfectly balance affordability with solid construction"6.
At Guitar Pedal X, the Chug Lite earned a BRONZE award in Stefan Karlsson's 2025 best new distortion pedals roundup, alongside the Muir Audio Silicon Steel Distortion4.

Questions
Is the Solar Chug Lite true bypass?
Yes. Guitar World's review lists the Chug Lite's bypass as true bypass, so the pedal's circuit is fully out of the signal path when it is switched off.
What power does the Solar Chug Lite need?
It runs on 9V DC and draws 25mA, which is low enough to share a standard pedalboard power supply with plenty of other pedals. Guitar World lists these figures in its review.
Does the Solar Chug Lite go in front of the amp or into the power amp?
Unlike the original Chug, which was designed to plug directly into a power amp, the Chug Lite has been tweaked to work into the front end of your amp, according to Guitar World's review.
What frequencies does the Chug Lite's mid control cover?
The Frequency dial works with the Middle control to cut or boost frequencies between 160Hz and 2.6kHz. That range covers most of where a guitar's body and bite live, so you can carve out room in a mix.
How big is the Solar Chug Lite?
Guitar World lists its dimensions as 65 x 42 x 124 mm, making it a compact box that fits easily on a crowded pedalboard, in contrast to the larger original Chug.
