The Tone Mob Model 001 Fuzz Generator is a fuzz pedal from SolidGoldFX, built with BC183 transistors for what Pedal of the Day called "a full, bold fuzz sound"1. Pedal of the Day's product page lists it as a guitar bass effects pedal, so it is presented for both guitar and bass players2. It belongs to SolidGoldFX's fuzz line alongside pedals like the If 6 Was 9, the 76 MKII and the Fuzzbox, and sits in the broader family of fuzz pedals.
What it does to your sound
Pedal of the Day described the Model 001 as "a multi-level, super-dynamic piece of musical gear" with a full, bold fuzz sound and crisp tones1. As a fuzz, it controls how much distortion is present in your signal, which Pedal of the Day described as ranging "from a slightly buzzy fuzz to all-out fuzz pandemonium"1. In a demo for Delicious Audio, Christopher Scapelliti called it a "gloriously versatile fuzz"3.
The main tone shaping comes from a three-way toggle switch. Pedal of the Day laid out the three positions like this1:
| Switch position | What it does |
|---|---|
| Far left | A normal, flat tonal response |
| Middle | A bit of treble boost to cut through a mix |
| Right | A bit of low end |
On the middle position, Pedal of the Day suggested setting the switch there "for a bit of Treble boost, and listen to it absolutely roar"1.
The Aluminum Edition and the Tone Mob collaboration
The pedal is the result of a collaboration between SolidGoldFX and The Tone Mob. Pedal of the Day called it "a collaboration between the crews at SolidGoldFX and The Tone Mob"1, and Delicious Audio reported that "the pedal is the result of a collaboration between the two manufacturers"3.
The Aluminum Edition is a special edition version of the original Model 001. Delicious Audio noted that SolidGoldFX "released the original Model 001" a while before the Aluminum Edition, and that the newer version adds machined aluminum knobs3. Andrew Jackson of Stohn Guitars described the original Model 001 run as looking like you "put a tuxedo on your pedalboard"3.
The Aluminum Edition was open for preorder from November 18, 2016 to November 29, 2016, and was made to order in the quantity ordered during that window3.
Pedal of the Day's reviewer came away impressed, calling the Aluminum Edition "a pedal that is expressive both visually and sonically, and one that's sure to make you take a step back in wonder the moment it's engaged"1. Delicious Audio's take on the same edition: "We took that gloriously versatile fuzz and turned the classiness dial up to 11"3. The demo for Delicious Audio was put together by Eirik of Living Room Gear Demos3.
