The Stoy Fuzzmaster Fuzz is a fuzz pedal from Stoy Sound, a Danish builder that unveiled a line of nine pedals in early 2022, the Fuzzmaster among them1. Delicious Audio describes it as "a hybrid take on the Muff-style fuzz, with mods to increase versatility," covering everything from "the restrained overdrive sound and light fuzziness to over the top biting fuzz"1.

What it does to your sound

The Fuzzmaster sits in the Big Muff family of fuzz pedals but adds controls a standard Muff does not have. In Delicious Audio's Big Muff buying guide, Griffin Jennings called it "A super-tweakable Muff-style fuzz with parametric footswitchable mids and three voices"2.

The three voices shape the character of the fuzz2:

  • Tight: a modern Big Muff sound with tight lows, focused mids and a crisp top end
  • Vintage: a classy Muff sound
  • Heavy: the third voice of the three-way switch

The parametric mids are footswitchable, so you can dial in a midrange bump or cut and bring it in and out while playing2. The dry signal can also be reintroduced, either pre or post gain, which lets you keep some clean low end and definition under the fuzz2.

Controls and power

ControlWhat it does
SustainAdjusts the amount of fuzz1
ToneProvides a range of sounds from high treble to roaring bass1
VolumeVolume control for the output signal1

The pedal runs on a DC9V supply and draws 10mA, a light load that fits easily on a shared power supply1. An expression output sets the range of the sustain level, so with an expression pedal connected you can sweep the fuzz amount with your foot1.

The soft-click footswitch is designed to avoid popping sounds when switching1.

Where it came from

Stoy Sound is described by Delicious Audio as an emerging Danish pedal builder that, in early 2022, unveiled a line comprising nine different pedals, with the Fuzzmaster as its Muff-style entry1. The name Fuzzmaster has also been used by other builders for Muff-adjacent circuits: the Lovepedal Silicon Fuzzmaster, for example, was described by its maker as a smooth silicon transistor fuzz that is warm, organic and sings with sustain, and one that players often use like an overdrive, distortion or full-on fuzz3.

Questions

Is the Stoy Fuzzmaster Fuzz based on a Big Muff?

Delicious Audio describes the Fuzzmaster as a hybrid take on the Muff-style fuzz, with modifications to increase versatility. Its Tight voice is described as a modern Big Muff sound with tight lows, focused mids and a crisp top end, while the Vintage voice is described as a classy Muff sound. So it sits in the Muff family rather than being a straight copy.

What power supply does the Stoy Fuzzmaster Fuzz need?

Delicious Audio lists the power requirement as DC9V with a current consumption of 10mA. A standard 9V DC supply covers it, and the low draw means it sits comfortably alongside other pedals on a shared supply.

What does the expression output on the Fuzzmaster do?

According to Delicious Audio, the Fuzzmaster has an expression output that sets the range of the sustain level. Paired with an expression pedal, it lets you sweep the amount of fuzz with your foot while playing.

Can you blend the dry signal back in on the Fuzzmaster?

Yes. Delicious Audio's buying guide notes that the dry signal can be reintroduced either before or after the gain stage, so you can keep low end and note definition under the fuzz or mix it back in afterward.

Does the Fuzzmaster Fuzz have a quiet footswitch?

Delicious Audio says the Fuzzmaster has a soft-click footswitch, so there are no worries about popping sounds or sore feet, even if you prefer to play barefoot.
